Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

So, I went looking for info on the strings that came factory installed on my Precision V (Fender USA). I have a brand new set of GHS Boomers that I want to try, but not quite ready yet. I went straight to the Squire Site, and GUESS what ??? No VMP V on the catalog! Squire's Vintage Modified Precision Bass V has been discontinued ?? Called Sweetwa*** and, at Full Comp***; Zak confirmed: "It appears that it has been discontinued"
I know, ha...I haven't touched an MIA, but I remember someone's blinded test in which he really couldn't tell between the Squire and his American-made. I am sure that there are a few hundred out there left, my favorite store has 5 left, 4 white ones and a Sunburst. Happy I got mine, a b-day gift from my wife
This always happens to the best Squier models. Such a shame. Im contemplating a white one. I guess I should move on it quickly.
Wow, and I just started wondering if I want to keep mine... (White). Now I'm really not sure that I would want to part with it
I picked up a used VM P5 yesterday as a gigging backup and am very impressed with this bass. Good fit and finish. REALLY close in feel/tone to the 2008 MIA Fender P5 I used to own. Under 9 lbs as well which was a pleasant suprise.
All stock (except for TI flats), it sounds great. I doubt I will bother swapping out the PU, bridge, capacitor or anything besides adding Dunlop straplocks.
My main gigging basses are Fodera, FBass and Valenti but the Squier will definately see some playing time.
I thought VM quality was great almost 10 years ago when I bought my VM fretless Jazz 4 (still own it), but these are fantastic for the $$$ IMO....

Right? I am putting TI's on mine too, and I agree, the basic electronics are just fine, maybe a switchcraft jack, if anything. Love the neck too, nice fretwork. My VMPV never needed fret dressing, I checked!
My Hipshot Kick ass bridge arrived! Hopefully get it installed tonight.
Well the kick ass is on, but like the original bridge, the B string saddle is slammed hard back. Probably needs a shorter spring, and the screw shortened to get a hair more out of it. The internal thread for the E string saddle didn't seem to be tapped to full depth, so I've ground a couple of mm off the screw to get enough adjustment. Little things, but frustrating when it looks to be a well engineered item.
Of course, if the original bridge was slammed hard back, it begs the question of whether the bridge mounting screws could have been 3mm further back so both bridges could operate closer to the middle of their range. Still tempted to remove the bridge and redo the holes.

It's certainly a heavier bridge. I'll gig it Saturday night so I will know then when I have it on for 45+ mins.
I don't expect it to be enough to notice.
Because they are essentially a Stingray clone?
Yes, it is more metal than I expected. The angle of the shot didn't help either I'm guessing.

Exactly.
I liked my ATK. It, too, had a very nice neck and comfortable string spacing.
But the tone was all string and not much wood- pretty much what I expect from a Stingray.
I want that woody honk when I pick up a P-bass. I guess that's why I tend to prefer vintage bridges on these...
The tone is mainly pickup style/placement on an ATK/Stingray.
This high mass bridge hasn't completely transformed the sound, but it has changed it. Everything sounds a bit tighter/ more direct. Haven't decided if it's for me yet.
Just because it has the big shiny plate like an ATK, it's a stretch to say it now sounds like one. Especially when you haven't heard it!
Thata really upsetting! Glad i got mine.
Good news is that the inexpensive instruments are being made better amd that wont be changing. Sucks that a P5 is so hard to find, but like i said. Glad i got mine. Maybe someone else will make a cheap one now.
