In jest yes. I had one for a while and sold it due to having a dozen basses in cases in my bedroom, not to mention all the other gear. Sold it to a friend after modding it (painted it sherwood green, upgraded the tuners and electronics). Killer bass for the price. I'm down to 3 5 string basses and I may sell one of them as well.

I just yesterday installed the (Squier retrofit) Kickass bridge on my Squier VM P Bass V and I can tell you it was an improvement in tone/sustain. And it was a perfect fit. The bridge holes lined up perfectly. For me it was well worth the upgrade. It does however increase the overall weight of the bass...... Just waiting for my Hipshot HB7 tuners to show up.

There was some discussion a few pages back about the pros/cons of changing the bridge. Once again, I say that on this particular bass, in my case, changing the bridge has had the biggest and most positive impact on tone. I installed a Hipshot A style bridge and it's great but if the KickAss had been available at the time, I would have chosen it.

Here is a music video from one of my bands' songs.
At the time of the recording the bass had its pickups replaced with the Nordstrands, but the wiring was a bit different than what it is in the photo.
In the clip you hear the bass with only the P pickup on, full tone, going through a Sansamp Bass driver DI. I play with a pick and the bass wears 3-4 months old Elixir strings.
I will try to record the bass just through a DI without any effects added to it and with both pickups on, but I don't know when I will be able to do it :\

Guys, how are the fret ends on these recent VM5vers? I used to own one Squier bass long time ago, don't recall what was the model, and it had nasty edges on on the fret ends, bruising my index finger, while moving up and down the neck. Is it still the case with modern Squiers or are the fret ends properly brushed/sanded?

I just found one Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V in my craved Olympic White+Tort combination on sale in nearby shop, but not nearby enough for local pickup, so just wondering if they improved the neck and frets.

The latest Squiers are made in a variety of factories, and the quality of the fret jobs vary accordingly.

Thankfully, the VMJ5 and VMP5 both look like the necks were made on the same line as the Classic Vibe series.

The gloss finish is often slopped on a little thick and bumpy, but the fretwork is worthy of a $1,000 bass.

Interesting. I have heard that the Nordstrand replacement is quite a bit more "polite" and I am not sure I want that in a P bass.

As to the question about the fret ends, I have looked at and felt of everything on my VM P 5 and I cannot find anything amiss. Nothing. I own very expensive custom handmade basses and I know what real nice is. Mine was real nice right out of the box. I modded it with the Nordy pup and a Hipshot A bridge (couldn't help myself) but the stock stuff sounded good too. Entry level gear has gotten way better since I started playing!

There are posts on YouTube where you can hear the Fender and Nordstrand pickups.

The difference is less than you would get from a height adjustment, which is as it should be- a P-bass pickup has to sound like a Precision, right?

Adding a Jazz at the bridge (space it closer to the neck than you would on an actual Jazz bass), adds some pleasing new tones. A luthier with the latest high-rpm tools can rout the hole for you without damaging the finish...
