It's different, everybody can hear that.

I'm glad to see them returing to more 'funky' playing. But those glorious BSSM days are over. The album is more catchy and imho more mainstream than BSSM. It's the way I thought it would be really. If you see the way they've been going with the last albums this is a very logical step.

The chillies have changed, and so has their music. BSSM was much more agressive than any of the later stuff, but these guys were younger back then too. Maybe they've just grown out of it?

I like change, I don't like bad music. Is it a coincidence that they're more popular than ever? No. Every 12 year old girl in the world listens to them now, because it's bland top 40 pop. And there's a lot of 12 year old girls in the world.

im sure 12 year old girls had nothing to do with the succes of the beatles.

i heard all of the songs that they played on the radio tonight...i thought that it was MUCH better and in your face than By The Way, and certainly not the same as californication. there are definitely elements of funk on this record, but definitely not as funky as blood sugar sex magik or the stuff that preceeded it. i was skeptical because i didn't really like dani california when they started playing it, but "charlie", "hump de bump", and "storm in a teacup" are all good songs.

why is everyone complaining that it doesn't sound like bloodsugarsexmagik? get over it, the people change and it reflects in their music. personally, i would take their evolving style over 10 bssms in a row because it is more genuine and less boring.

Well thanks for reiterating my point. You're right, because The Beatles quickly moved from generic 60's pop to much more intense music. The Chilis did the 90's opposite.

BSSM isn't boring. I listen to it all the time (and have for ten years) and I always hear new stuff. Try finding new stuff in the Zephyr song. :hmm:

I thought their new album was pretty damn good...sure, there are def songs I like better than others, but overall most are pretty good. I like it better than By the Way, and they def brought back their funk-rock magic for numerous songs. Also, I noticed Flea's basslines are different than ones hes done in the past, different in a good way. He sounds alot "busier" on many of his songs but still able to hold down a good melody...his bass seems to carry this album alot more than it did in others. Alot of people seem to be complaining about this album -and they're right, its not another BSSM-, but personally I think it has some great songs on it and overall a really fun and groove-filled listen.

Whether or not you like this CD really depends on what kinda style/phase of the Chili's you like. There is a LOT of harmony with Frusciante singing (I see this as a good thing). The songs are soft as people pointed out, but they seem harder to me then BTW. On an individual level I like Flea's bass lines, but not his tone on this cd ....oh well I guess it's better that he keeps changing basses instead of always sounding the same. John definitely has some sweet moments though.

Overall I'd say right now its ehhh, but its probably going to grow on me. A lot.

Since Frusciante started doing two-note solos on Californication, I have no respect for the band. And seeing Keidis not hit ONE note in tune on 'Live at Slane Castle' I can't believe anyone likes them at all.

Frusciante's guitar playing has seriously blossomed on this album. His solos are a incredible again. Give it a listen, if you don't like it, don't listen to it ever again, if you do, then hooray!

I completely agree about Flea's tone...it's not as ballsy as i would have expected it to be. I must say that I definitely liked his Modulus sound more than his new vintage Jazz sound. From the songs that I've heard, John is definitely ripping it up on guitar these days. I haven't heard him solo like that in a long time. :bassist:

As for the bass sound on the new album, does it sound to anyone else as if he's probably used quite a bunch of different basses?

As for John's solos, I don't know, I never thought that much of them and I still don't, I remember a pretty fast solo with a whole lot of notes in some song but I forgot what song it was, I've always thought his main strenght was his awesome Hendrix-style rhythm playing, you know, when he plays chords or double stops and throws in a bunch of licks, hammer-ons and embellishments ever so often, which he seems to be doing more on the new record, which I dig, because in my opinion, it's pretty much the coolest way to play rhythm guitar.

My favourite RHCP guitar solos are probably on "Fight like a Brave" (although that was Hilel) , "Could have lied" and "Easily" (yeah I know it's simple but I still think it sounds awesome). Dave's solo on "Walkabout" was pretty good too.

John's solos started sucking after BSSM. I could have lied probably had his best solo ever.

If you go into it expecting the punk funk early stuff then your gonna be dicipointed, their last to albums didnt have any so why would this. Its the mature chili pepper sound. You cant be expecting freaky styley stuff no matter how bad you want it, theve grown and change. I still think it should be a good album.

Stopped listen with any consistancy after Mother's Milk. Have Blood Sugar & One Hot (bought them both used), but won't be buying any more.
Still spin quite often Up Lift Mofo Party Plan and Freaky Styley like crazy- REAL RHCP IMO

Actually, I'll jump over to www.allofmp3.com a few days after it's out and get it there for like $2.

If you haven't checked allofmp3.com out yet, do so.

I've been using it for about two years now and never had one issue. So I guess I will be getting the new one!

i'm really looking 4ward to getting the album. When 'BTW' 1st came out i was really dissappointd, but after i accepted the change and the fact they had startd moving in a new direction i was able to see them in a new light, and now that album is one one of my fav's from them. In fact i like every album they have done. They will definitly go done as one the greats.
