That scene took every bit of mystery and grandeur out of the Guardian of Forever. Made it comical, or made an attempt at comedy. And why would Georgeou demonstrating better choices solve her problem? That started as kind of a cool idea. Time traveling after universe traveling causing problems for your atoms, but moral redemption solves it?
As far as the villain, the Kelpian kid wasn't a villain. He didn't do anything wrong knowingly. The only villain was the Orion lady and she was just awful. Not menacing. Not interesting. No depth.

I'm astonished at your reaction. Completely baffled. :meh: Tis a head scratcher to me. ;)

This doesn't mean anything in the big picture, but while my sister was on 14 day quarantine, I suggested she try Discovery. She watched all three seasons in about ten days. She's far from being a Star Trek fan and has only a passing knowledge of bits of canon. She absolutely loved the show. When she finished S3 she texted me "When is Season 4 coming out???!!!"

I got nothin'. Signing out.

What's astonishing? The guardian of forever and my opinion? It wasn't a particularly fleshed out character. He had more screen time in the animated series. They made him a guy with a cigar and a bowler hat. Why? Who does that speak to? Georgeou, the murderous despot from an alternate reality? Burnham, the crybaby self appointed savior of the cosmos? The audience? Or do you just mean the cgi of the tunnel? I'll admit the cgi in the show is terrific but thay doesn't save it.

And this isn't exactly a Federation ideal, but shooting the Kelpian in the back of the head like George shot Lenny was the only logical choice. I'm sorry. He could've lost his **** and screamed again and destroyed what's left of the Federation. As far as I know he's still dangerous. What if he meets a nice Kelpian girl and she breaks up with him. He can kill billions. The needs of the many...

At least send him to Vulcan, or Nivar, and have him purge his emotions in the kolinar. He's a menace.

This. The dialogue back and forth between acting Captain Tilly and Green Orion Girl was as riveting as a middle school cat fight. That was my "almost threw the remote" moment.

All of Michael's "whispering to convey intensity" just got distracting as the season wore on. I seriously started to turn on the captions to find out what the dialogue was a few times, but never cared enough.

So why am I watching it? I completely understand the question, but no one likes the answer.

A) I get invested in a show, or a book, even bad ones. Then the point becomes "I've gotten this far, I'm going to finish the XXXX thing...."
B) I paid for the XXXX thing......

Exactly. Yes this is a tv show. It's not life or love or work or family, but as ludicrous as it sounds, Star Trek is important to me. It matters. Alex Kurtzman, that ****** ******, has been handed the reigns to the future of this thing that's important to me and as much as I despise it, I have to watch. I don't sit around stewing about it. I only ever talk about it here. I may not have the time but I have till Saturday to get through Lower Decks before I deactivate my trial.

What exactly is the deal with Adira's dead boyfriend/former host to the trill symbiont? Why did a teenager have a symbiont to begin with? That kid was like 15. Adira got the symbiont during an emergency. The boyfriend had it like he'd had it for a while. It's not completely crazy for Adira to see him if he's a former host, but why did the holodeck on the dilithium world make him visible? Is the AI running the thing supposed to have read Adira's mind and know that they were communing with a dead host?

I'm not an expert in this.... but my impression was that the BF also got the host in an emergency. I guess on a different ship, when the old Federation Admiral guy was dying.


I admit that I get distracted with the wokeness of having - I read this somewhere - of Adira being a trans girl and the boyfriend being a trans boy.

I get that it gives trans actors roles, but are pigeonholed roles really the aim? Maybe Adira gets a non trans boyfriend or girlfriend, humanoid or not, in S4?

Discovery has two primary focuses: splosions and emotion. This season they held back on the violence and ramped up the emotion so hard that a traumatized kid, via a throwaway line, created what seemed to be a spherical, expanding wave that destroyed all dilithium in the galaxy, once again demonstrating the show's lack of understanding of space time and distance. They showed the wave in the playback of the event in the holo ship. That wave wasn't moving very fast yet every ship in the galaxy, quadrants apart, all exploded nearly simultaneously? They did the same thing with the red signals last season. Somehow they knew and saw all these signals at the same time? Does light not take time to travel?

ST has always been a tad lax with the science of relativity, simultaneity, time dilation, etc... Perhaps the answer is a disturbance in subspace or something... some realm where everything actually happens at once, rather than 4D spacetime?

IMO, the death of Michael Burnham would elevate the show by 1000%. But that would certainly be too emotional for the cosmos to survive....

When they first spot the red signals, they show a map of the entire galaxy. I remember one of them was 50,000 light years away. Almost as far as Voyager 200 years later yet they somehow had a map of all of them.

I doubt they'll kill off Burnham.

Perhaps rose-colored glasses, but back in the TNG days I had the impression that Star Trek made an attempt to have a semi-plausible technical/scientific basis for the show, even though many of the technologies are likely impossible in reality. However, STD seems less concerned about such matters and more about impressive effects and lots of hyped-up drama. I've literally rolled my eyes whilst watching more times than I can count.

As for Burham, STD is basically The Incredible Michael Burnham Show (featuring themes from the sci-fi series known as Star Trek). In one of the episodes later in S3 there was even a line from one of the crew members about how they were "waiting for Michael to save us!". It's that thin. Burnham IS the show. The other characters are all expendable.

IMO, the show lacks both intelligence and a soul, by which I mean it lacks the philosophical underpinnings and vision of earlier series. But it looks shiny and modern and has lots of explosions in space.

930 years and they couldn't come up with a new method of faster than light travel? Quantum slipstream? Trans warp? They had programmable matter and detached nacelles. Why did they have nacelles if they don't have warp drive? Because no one on the staff knew or cared.

That is my main problem with the show. Talk to them, Michael. It has to be you, Michael. Get in the Trillie pool, Michael. Because you have a unique perspective. Because only you can do it. Because...reasons. Hadn't seen a show so centred on the main character, and so in-universe vocal about it, since...I dunno. CSI:Miami? NCIS? By all means it could fully revolve around a protagonist, but this should feel *earned*.
Regarding the rest of the regular cast, while I realise they don't necessarily need to coincide with the bridge crew, my problem is with the fact that some of those who clearly aren't as well focused upon end up being little more than cardboard cutouts. The pilot has mild PTSD. Owo is cute, and a good friend to everybody else. Bhrys and Ryce are...there. And that's about it. I mean, clearly they're no Worf or Data, but they could be Barclay. Or O' Brien when he was a recurrer in TNG. But nope. How does a 1-1/2-hour movie like Booksmart leave clear impressions of all minor characters, but a 3-season series can't?

Oh, and a random thing. Nhan and Saru were put on a bus basically the same way: put the ship on an extremely important mission that happens to involve an encounter with a fellow speci-person of an alien of the crew (a species that also happens to be once -Nhan's- or never -Saru's- heretofore known in the franchise before ST: DIS); then, make the crewmember desire to go down home with said person. Only, on one occasion it's "Michael, talk to him", because Nhan is too close to his viewpoint; on the other it's the exact opposite: "Saru, go talk to the century-old kid (because duh, he's one of your people), and start clearing the chair on the way out".
