Steinberger Club

Hmmm… I think it is possible that this is somewhat misleading information. "4-40" is the imperial thread size that has been originally designed and used on all Steinberger tuners. That's where the "1:40" tuner ratio comes from (40 turns to move 1 inch). They switched to metric with the later tuners, all guitar bridges have an M3 thread. On my bass jaws (4-string) the thread is M3.5. The length is about 40 mm.

So I'm not sure what BGS actually says here…

Bernd

5 wide is a later bridge, and BGS posted that for the "wide" jaws only - please see the list of instruments in my post above. That 4mm/40 size is NOT applicable to any other instruments, including the original Newburgh or any 4-string Steinbergers. So there shouln't be any discrepancy here.
That's why they sell the "original jaw" replacements WITH the rods included, while selling the "wide 5" replacement jaws without the rods

The jaws themselves are shaped differently. Here's the shape of a "wide 5" jaw:

And this is the "vintage" jaw shape:

OK, I understand, thanks.

By the way, Steinberger instruments are full of a metric/imperial dimensions mixture. All grub screws on regular production bridges are metric (maybe due to the fact that e.g. the TT2 was manufactured in Japan), but also the dimensioning on bridges. Guitar bridges have a width of 80 mm, but a string spacing of 2" from E to e. The other way around on the Radius bass. String spacing 18 mm from string to string, but everything else is designed with imperial dimensions.

The XL has imperial sized 5/32" (3,96mm) peg-threads.
Axial Philips fixation (couldn't release the very thight set screws).

The L has probably imperials too (those ain't that easy to unmount).
Fixation is lateral with a tiny 5/64" (2.2mm) set Hex, key is 0.05.

From Czech Republic to my home (sorry for the poor quality pictures) :hyper::

Well, what could I say...

First of all the bass arrived perfectly setted from the factory as neck relief, action on the strings and especially for the intonation!

I'm very impressed both for the timbre and the playability, this bass plays like a butter with a very low action and no buzzes, defenitely Ned Steinberger and the people of the factory in the Czech Republic know their job. ;)

The timbre, as described previously by Bernd, is the best of the two worlds (wood and composite material), but stay away from this bass if you are looking for a sort of "replica" of the old Steinbergerger basses.

I'm very happy!
How does that new bridge/tuner work? I see it looks quite different than previous bridges...

Take it apart!!!!! Take pics!!!! :D

hi, guys!

used the ol' XL2A last year for a reggae tour. it was great w/ GHS SS rounds strung BEAD. this coming year i want to try flatwounds! does anyone know of any double-ball flats on the market? i have found LaBellas, but i'd have to buy a single B for $18.00! i guess the string adapter is the best solution, unless....

Bernd just sent me a set of spare screws for the L and the XL (a bit of everything).
So i'm very happy to replace the ones on the L's battery-cover and one of the face-plate... looks like new now, or almost as! :D
Thank you very much Bernd, you did me a great favor! :smug:

Well, this should help, what about some pics of your babe:

Are you sure, isn't the carbon enclosed in the wood?

Should be as you wrote, anyway on all of my (bolt-on :D) basses I usually remove the neck from the body to take a look inside the edge of the neck and the part of the body where the neck is inserted... I'm curious...

On the other hand i'm curious on the tuning system too, must be kinda clamp i guess.

Exactly.

Congratulations, a beauty. You will enjoy it :)

It is completely different. It takes standard strings and clamps them…

You're welcome, Bob. Sometimes good things may take a while :)

About the bridge, it is possible to set both intonation and string height (more info here).

For some reason I know that there will be a complete manual for that bass, too. Should be available very soon, I'll let you know then.

Are you sure, isn't the carbon enclosed in the wood? I thought i was making a joke!

Uh… it is enclosed. No chance to see it, if you don't remove the fretboard. Which is not advisable :D
