Steinberger Club

Just out of curiosity, who makes double ball end strings with black silk?

Well....just got the string adapter for my 5 String Spirit..put GHS precision flats on and its like a new bass.
No longer thinking about hacking a pickup upgrade. Although still confused about how easy,or not, a pickup grade is, even with all the research.

First there was Orville G. but he had no clue on electric basses (until present days), then there was Leo F. -a true genius before the Lord, who scripted the electric bass concept into stone and that seemed ok forever and a day ... alright, i drift off, long story short: Nerdy Ned Steinberger gave it another try and the L1 & 2 got birth and why not ride the upcoming 5er mania? He just added a string on it, but this caused a problem in spacing (which isn't a problem at all) so the world demanded a standard spacing on the Ls and nerdy Ned delivered. But Orvilles' progenitors (meanwhile owning all licenses) hated the costly manufacture of the XL5W and stabbed it down to a wooden clone (a deadly sin imo); so now only 65 of this gems were made beside the wonderful XQ5 (same Japanese metric ZEN hardware), pushing it up with HAZLab electrics (which can be pretty capricious on stage) to give it a never known brute bass punch on 3.6kg only. In comparison the L2-5 comes equal to a '62 Preci but with quite more of a bite on low mids (which i like best) but the XL5W is THE bass monster per se, -comfy coming from other 5ers, but this may be the sole comparison, the rest is bass-madness at its best, what ever you want in tone, you'll get it. To be fair on other, i also own a Warwick Streamer 5 and this baby has an extraordinary 5th string like other brands may have as well, but none i've ever tried and played can go equal to the Bergers.

For new(er) Spirit owners, how is the durability of the basswood body? Would you buy one again? And how is the b string? I have an old Hohner B2 that I’m thinking of selling because I need a five string for lessons, and was considering picking up a Spirit XT-25. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Well, be aware that Gibson goes for maximum profit and will give you a bright shine with a foul inner life.
Just a burp of a 5th string with mediocre cast hardware and even a costly pimping on EMG-BTC electrics didn't help.
I d'spent a 100-150$, anything else is disappointing; just truth, no troll meant.

Tell me how you really feel.

I appreciate your thoughts. That’s part of the reason that I’m torn selling the Hohner. That thing is built like a tank. If I could find a reasonably priced Hohner 5 headless, it really wouldn’t be a question.
That’s for the response.

The first series of the Hohner B2 IV + V was made quite well in serious german engineering at Cort in Korea; they had a tricky e-circuit and a Phenol fretboard ... i d'reach fore one of these, but count up to 500$.

Be patient and look for one. I have a B2V, 2 x B2 and a Spirit but I've been looking for another B2V locally for years and haven't found one. Not saying it's better than the Spirit, but for some reason I can't put my finger on, I prefer playing the Hohners.

I came across a Hohner B2AV today for around $500 that I’m considering picking up, but only if I can sell my B2 quickly first.
It has 2 J style pickups, correct? If so, please post what you think of the tone, especially as compared to the B2. I'm contemplating modding my B2V with new PUs, and the Nordstrand Zen Blades are calling a siren song to me.

Does anyone have experience with the HBCS PUs? I've had several people tell me over the years I should replace the bridge unit with one, and the reasons have always been vague, but I have no idea what difference it would make to the sound, and if that difference would be worthwhile. Anyone with experience care to comment?

As an amusing sidenote, a few years back, a local B&M store, now closed, had a pair of NIB HBSS in the counter for a silly price, so I bought them even though I didn't have a use for them at the time. When I got them home, one was a old solder type and the other was the newer solderless. Makes no difference to me as I'm an EE and can easily adapt and just solder them in, but it did amuse me. I think they'll go in the yellow Spirit (aka banana).
