Steinberger Club

Quite possibly the coolest pose with a Steinberger. Tina Weymouth, 1980.

Just got my 4th Ned Steinberger instrument. But this one is an 85 XL-2. I sent it to Jeff Babicz for an over hall and customization to make it a one of a kind but sadly it’s gonna take me a while to save up to make it what I want. But in the mean time it plays and sounds GREAT! I love the ergonomics and weight. Especially for a 52 year old man with a bad back who play 4 hour gigs!

love the neck and tone. There just doesn’t seem to be a comfortable place to rest my thumb. That will be addressed permanently when it’s customized but any ideas on a zero mod thumb rest in the mean time?

oh my. That’s my holy grail bass right there. Unlined XL25W. I have an unlined L2 which I have had now for almost 40 years and nothing out there can touch it.

This one has the HAZ system electronics-

Regarding the holy grail part- a couple of years before the purchase I remarked to a luthier friend that if I were to own a classic Steinberger, it would have to be an unlined Fretless five string, thinking that it would never materialize- and lo, and behold it did!

Which was pretty near miraculous since there are only about five other Fretless XL-25’s that are unlined or unmarked, with the exception of a white one, if you don’t include ever rarer wide neck models like you mentioned-

Zero-Mod sells a couple of basic straight thumb rests that can be positioned pretty much anywhere with a couple of screws (which they include). I've done that with a few of my basses that either don't have a pick guard or don't have one where I'd need the rest to be positioned. I will say thought that I have Zero-Mod's on almost all of my basses and although they're kinda pricey for what they are I wouldn't personally use anything else for a thumb rest. No affiliation to ZM whatsoever but I am a fan of their products. They will also customize if you wanted something specific and are willing to part with the $$$.

Look at the Jaguar Bass Edition i.e. for a straight rest, or maybe the Ric model. Zero - Mod MODELS

At the coffee shop working on chapter 88- believe I should be able to finish in about 40 pages or less. At about 450 or so now.

Do you still visit the Warwick Forum? I was a bit concerned when I didn't hear back from you regarding a PM query about the old-style Steinberger battery covers. Reason being that the folks at HeadlessUSA were saying that if you weren't careful, the screw nut could fall off into the body. I managed to sort it out though.
