Sterling Ball on the New Stingrays

Yeah, I don't think I'd go swapping parts as the whole is incredible. On a ten scale, easily 9.8 or greater and the odds of improving it to a 9.85 is rather low. More likely to diminish some other factor. I'll add Dunlop strap locks though.

The new bridge is significantly smaller, and is a weight saving item. Many of our brethren like it, others not as much. To each his own.

Overall I like the look and sound of the new basses, but I’d probably change the bridge to something more beefy.
In reality I probably won’t bite on a new Ray until they bring back the fretless option.

There is nothing wrong with the bridge. You had one experience with a mutilated bass.

The SR Special I got is simply amazing (4HH Dropped Copper). The Charcoal Sparkle 4H will arrive tomorrow as well. I have a gig Friday and will be posting a review on Saturday. I basically sold the farm for these two since they have been my dream basses since the 90s.

So far I am blown away by how good the first one is.

The Dropped Copper is really calling to me, I have to think it looks even more amazing in person. I dig it enough that I’ve been eyeballing my basses wondering which I can part with to get one in the HH config.

Once I saw it in the store, I was sold. The preamp is the real deal, all the frequencies are extremely musical, usable, and boost/cut in a way that is never extreme. The Friday gig will be the final test to see how it works in the mix.

The color in person is metallic, red/orange/gold and classy as all heck, especially with the roasted maple neck and chrome hardware.

Nnnnggghhhh. I guess I don’t really need two fivers, and my Jazz isn’t getting played much. Damn you Ball family! :help:

Dropped copper looks even better in person than it does in pictures. And it looks great in pictures. Much more red than you’d think. In fact I’m kind of surprised they called it copper anything.

From all the videos I've checked on youtube (and I've checked them all lol), those sound great! In fact, they seem to sound a bit more mellow than regular 3 band, and closer to the original 2 band preamp (at least, to my ears, and based on youtube videos ofc), but with a high pass filter on the bass if I'm not mistaken. It doesn't sound very far off from my BFR Stingray 4H where I swapped the preamp for a John East MM preamp and Nordstrand MM4.2 to get that pre eb tone. Again, all based on youtube videos, nothing beats trying one out in person.

I want one, it would be a perfect pair for my current one. Old school and modern. And lower weight would be appreciated for longer gigs.

A lot of the improvements make the Stingray Special closer to a Sterling than the regular Stingray. They get a lighter more contoured body and an extra fret. How would you improve the Sterling so it would be different from the Stingray specials?

The Sterling has the jazz neck and the downsized body so if they make the same changes you could theoretically have a 7.0-7.5 lb bass with a jazz neck and stingray sound.

From the pictures, liked the Dropped Copper and the Charging Green. Was leaning to the Charging Green, but will have to try and see both in person. Agree that most music man colors look better than they come across in pictures.
