Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 and Ray5

Just plugged her in and thankfully everything seems fine. Probably the worst stock strings I've ever played. Strung her up with pressure wounds and now she sings. Also, this is the first bass I've played that I like the tone it gets with the treble turned up.

While I have personal favorites, I believe it is best to go outside the bubble and get input from fans/players/fellow musicians.

Let's face it. I'm a middle aged man, going through a mid life crisis, playing music in a garage with friends who have a 50/50 chance of playing someplace other than the garage. Under no circumstance should I be allowed to buy a $1500 bass.

So I went to GC today and played both an SB4 and a Ray4 (Walnut stain).... I'm seriously about to throw up one of my J's for sale to buy the Ray4.

The Ray had BAWLS. It growls, it sings, it barks, and it woofs. The neck profile is perfect if you like a meaty Jazz neck and it has the same great feel your typical EBMM has.

SBMM... well done, I'll say this was the most pleasant suprise at $279 I've ever seen and will be adding one to the stable ASAP

What about someone first wanting to put their feet into the Music Man waters? What about a 14 year old who can only buy off of his allowance? And what about someone who's just too dang poor? Not everyone should save up for a professional instrument.

What's the problem? People pour thousands into sporty little cars that will only ever hit 65 on a freeway. Hobby is a hobby, and if it costs you 1500 grand to play a killer bass with some buddies, then go for it!

Well RobBottom69 is using reason and I know that is not a popular idea because of the "me" culture that is currently popular but that "me" movement may not suit everyone.
I for one did not buy a SUB series because I was concerned it may not meet my expectations of the MM sound so I bought a Ray5 because it (based on what I read) will duplicate that sound, so being able to afford a new MM I chose to buy a less expensive variant just to try and find out if it is right for me or not.
So I choose not to buy what I really wanted when something else should do the same thing based on current conditions and if I like it I can move up if I want to.

I would never think of a Jazz neck as MEATY, but the SB4 would have a more Jazz neck. The SR would have more of a Pbass thicker neck.

I'm mechanically....challenged. What do I need to adjust the truss rod? There's a very slight bow in the neck which I'd like to fix. That would need a tiny clockwise turn of the little wheel on the bottom of the neck right? Pathetically, I don't own any tools. Do I need allen key? Would any rigid metal stick do? I have little screwdrivers for eyeglass screws.

Just use any sturdy metal object. Find the thickest that will fit the hole, and turn it a quarter turn at a time to the left if looking at the wheel with the bridge closest to your body. I hope this makes sense.

Just use any sturdy metal object. Find the thickest that will fit the hole, and turn it a quarter turn at a time to the left if looking at the wheel with the bridge closest to your body. I hope this makes sense.

Make sure you're turning the right way? If you trying to add more relief (raise the strings) you turn to the left (toward the E string). It sounds to me like you want to LOWER the strings, so in that case turn it to the RIGHT (toward the G string)

Just put the object in whatever hole is further away from the direction you will be turning. Also if you are tightening, and it's hard to turn, you could loosen the strings to make it easier.
