Stingray 5 Club!

I use all 5 positions on most gigs, but #4 (inner coils) has been my long time favorite.

However, lately I've been spending a lot of time in #5 (neck pickup). I'm finding that that position sounds GREAT with a low- to medium-gain OD with a some high mid boost.

I'm pretty stoked to explore and experiment with all the tones. I see some deep dives in my future.

Anyone ever have this happen?
The D string machine head won’t keep the string tight. It gets its tuned then seems to loose tension and won’t tighten seems to turn but doesn’t do anything? I’ve tried two different strings. But same result.
Bad machine? Can I tighten the big screw on the back? The nut on the front?
Thanks in advance.

This sounds more like a problem with the string to me. The core might be broken but the winding is in tact. If the peg is turning then I’d try a new D string before messing with the tuning machine.

edit: I’m so sorry, I just noticed the part where you tried another string already. Good luck

You may want to try wrapping once over and the rest under. That’s what Ernie Ball recommends for their flats.
That's what I did. Thank you, it seems to be holding now. Got yet another new string, much better.

I also swapped out by .130 B for a .125. The sound is much more focused and even across the strings, not as much sub. I dig it.

Thanks for the response. With this bass I seem to be looking for a problem instead of just enjoying it. Gotta start the latter.

Ok, you convinced me to put Chromes on my OLP MM32, rather than one of my single pickup Rays. I'm probably not going to slap the OLP much, due to the neck pickup being in the way, so why not focus on fingerstyle tones!

Edit: I've just fitted the Chromes and they sound INCREDIBLE! Just all of the good tones, without some of the bad ones, like finger-noise.

Wait 'til they settle in. I'm willing to bet that you'd like them even more in a few months.

I'm not sure Chromes are my favorite string overall (I still lean toward nickel Lo Riders), but they're clearly my favorite flats out of the 5 or so I've tried. I've had them on my SR5 a couple of times, including the past year or so, and think they sound fantastic once they've had time to age.

Did early SR5s have gloss necks?

Also, what were the alnico vs ceramic years?

Can’t recall on the neck finishes.

I believe the ceramics were used from 1993 to 2008. Personally, I loved the ceramic pups. Nice bright bite to them. I currently house (not own, not yet anyway) a 2011 SR5 and I can kinda make it bite like the ceramics did. I like it a lot.

Agreed about the bright bite with the ceramic pickups (my SR5HH is a 2007). It's a great thing when you want it and the 3-band EQ is so flexible that it's also pretty easy to dial it out when you need to. I've also been using flats on this bass for most of the last couple of years and they tame the bite a little, but that change works great for my band's song list. I get some occassional grumbling from our guitar player when he's trying to watch my hands to see what I'm playing (the 5-string throws him off), but it's cool that he also tells me how much he loves how that bass sounds. Me too. :D

Thanks guys. I like the ceramic vibe too. If I ever got another SR5 I would be on the hunt for one from that era.

I asked about the gloss because I see one one on the gc site that very much looks glossy but its a 91 so Ill pass on it. Im not a fan on the bare wood/oiled neck thing though.

Has anyones pre amp or battery compartment gone bad in their mid to late 90s SR5?? I just got my output jack replaced and the first gig after I lost all the signal coming from the bass towards the end of the set after it’d been working fine (checked amps and cables). I figure the jack replacement just didn’t take and some soldering came loose. Just got it back from the same tech who just redid the whole jack replacement (free of charge) with another new jack and it seems fine now but the tech said he thinks it might be an issue with either the battery or the preamp. Any thoughts? Any similar experiences?

worst case scenario I guess I’ll have to drop a new preamp in but I’d rather keep my old one cause I have been absolutely in love with everything about this bass since I got it…when it is working.

I don't have any experience with this. However I have read here on TB about a few SRs that have had this problem and it turned out to be the jack. The jack as I understand it triggers the battery and pre-amp when the cable is plugged into it. If your SR worked before the new jack and then had a problem after a new jack and now after a new new jack it works again. Might be solved. I'd play the God out of it before your next gig to make sure its fixed. Good luck!
On a different note, my input jack doesn't seem to have a hard click when the cable is inserted. It seems to work fine but I every time I plug in I am concerned a bit.
