For sale 2007 Musicman StingRay 5 HS 20th Anniversary Ernie Ball

It sold elsewhere 2007 20th Anniv StingRay 5 HS in Sunset Orange quilt maple with mathing headstock, rosewood board, with original case. Only 75 of the HS were made. Very nice glossy condition overall and super clean, hardware shiny and sparkly, no fret wear. EB Slinky 40-125 nickels installed...

I saw it too and my jaw dropped and I was hoping there was something I could trade for it - and there was. The seller said he'd trade for a Big Al 5, which I own! However, even though Stingrays are my favorite bass, I have a couple already and would like to try several more variants (including this one!), there's just NO way I'm trading my Big Al. Even for such a gorgeous Stingray.

But, wow, that bass is gorgeous .....

I just saw this and immediately thought of you. I guess he isn’t interested in your P5?

I wouldn’t trade that Big Al for it. You would likely regret it.

I think you should add a Bongo next to complete your 5 string collection!

But there is another 20th model HS Stingray for a little cheaper here

That add says 350 made, the other add says 75 made 🤷‍♂️

So I’m wondering about the neck profile between the Stingray Special 5H and the 5HH… on the 2 specimens that I have, the 5HH seems to have a much slimmer taper to the neck whereas the 5H seems to have a chunky feel and thicker shoulders on the neck. Is that the norm or do I have something that’s slightly different/unique on this 5HH?

I have noticed that the Special 5 neck is just a tad slimmer than the pre Specials I have had.

Not a huge difference though

The ad mentioned a few Musicman basses as possible trades, including a Big Al 5. Unfortunately it didn't mention either of the two I'd be willing to trade - my L-2500 and Precision V. I really do have to write up for sale ads for those two. They've been sitting in their cases for over three and over two years, respectively, waiting for me to do something about them.

Actually, for many years I've been thinking off and on about getting myself a nice, brand new bass as a gift to myself when I retire (I've always bought used), which could be as early as this time next year. But, after getting my second Stingray and my Big Al, I decided I was so happy with my three Musicmans (and my four others) that I stopped GASsing for any more basses.

But recently I started thinking about a Bongo - 5HH if new but possibly a 5 HS if I could find a used one. I played one once in a local Guitar Center not long after they first came out and decided at that point that the looks don't matter to me at all. It was that impressive an instrument and I think it would be a great complement to my current three Musicmans. No idea at this point if I will actually do it, but I still have a little time to think about it.

Maybe after your unused basses sell you'll pull the trigger.

I've really come around on the Bongo, I haven't played much else last couple months. I still really want a single H Bongo to compare to the Stingray

But I want a lot of things 😆 the truth is I've never been much of a multiple bass guy. Despite owning them I generally just play one or two

I’ve been eying a California-made Sterling 5 and am not familiar with that model. It has the “classic” style pickguard, 3 way switch, 4 knobs (so 3 band, presumably), and smaller bridge. My current darling is a MM Classic 5 StingRay that weighs 11 lbs; this Sterling I’m eyeing is under 9 lbs. Obviously no two pieces of wood are the same, so that could be some of the weight difference, but is the bulk of that 2 lb difference just hardware? If so, I’m considering buying the Sterling and swapping some parts - I do prefer the classic pickup and 2 band; and while the classic bridge is cool, if that’s a huge part of the weight, I’d definitely consider swapping them. Does anyone know if this is a reasonable thought? I can handle it as is, but shedding a couple of pounds wouldn’t hurt my feelings!

the Sterling model is smaller all around: slightly smaller body, smaller headstock. The neck is typically more slender

To me it would be a shame to strip down a Classic 5 for parts. The Ray circuit board with its direct mounted pots may not even line up with the holes in the Sterling body, then again it might!
The pickup switch pointed back puts it in parallel mode, you might really end up liking it as-is.

Necks always came down to who in the shop was final sanding it as that part is done by hand.
