So for my 5HH, I’ve been contemplating if I could/should rewire position one to be series instead of parallel as it is now.

I tested this last night, during a 4hr gig since I had 49 songs to play with. 😃 I found that the middle position was pretty useful for tunes where I needed less bite and reduced overtones. Sounded great in my IEMs, then popped out my left side and could hear the difference out front too.

I also found myself flipping between positions, mid songs at different points as well. During parts where I needed a little more brightness I’d flip to first position, and then most of the song was either in position three or two depending on the song type. It’s surprising how versatile the tones are with the Stingray Special 5H.

Does anyone have a Black/White/Black pre 2018 Stingray 5 guard hanging around, they want to sell? I want to replace the Aged White Pearl guard on mine. Place I ordered from is now saying mid April before I can get one.

Not sure why I never looked for this club before lol. Technically, I bought this ‘99 StingRay for my wife back in 2019 but I played it mostly. Now she plays it WAY more than I do. She likes the bridge cable D’Addario Chromes on it A LOT. I’m not a fan, but it’s still a fantastic and exquisite example of an SR5. Turned the highs on the bass all the way down and left the bass and mids at center.

Nice!

I put Chromes on my 2007 5HH a few times and really liked how they sounded - and felt (I love thick, stiff strings). I'd say they're my favorite flat and they sound especially good on more aggressive sounding basses, like my Stingrays and my L-2500. I don't remember if I ever put them on my Warwick FNA Jazzman 5 but, if I didn't, I defintely SHOULD have.

For some stupid reason, I sold that 1988 Blueburst Stingray 5. I sold it to a buddy of mine, who banged the headstock on something and it knocked off the nut and took out a chunk of wood. 🙄
My new one is a 2001 in Dawn Blue Sparkle. I got a good deal on it. According to the Ernie Ball Website (serial numbers and specs), it originally came with a Black guard, I haven’t determined if I like the aged white pearloid or black guard better.

She also liked the Ernie Ball cobalt flats. I HATED them lol. I loved it with fresh Super Slinkys. It was absolute perfection. All that upper end clarity and setup for just a bit of fret sizzle… ugh… BUT it’s “hers”… happy wife happy life and all lol. It IS very nice to play and does sound really good still even with flats. If I had to guess, the now 2 year old Chromes will be on there for at least another 5 years lol.

I haven’t tried to play it since last summer. Not sure why, but I felt like bustin it out for the Bryson tune. I’ve tried to like different flats for a few years now. Just can’t get along with em. BUT, maybe I’ll use it for another playthrough video.

Alnico in the 2001 Sting 5 snd Ceramic in the Sterling. The Stingray I can pretty much run the EQ flat. On the Sterling, I run the Midrange and Bass controls a little past center, to add a little girth.

Unless you changed the pickup, then 2001 is ceramic pickup era for the SR5

Maybe sound difference due to body size, woods, strings etc?

They sound nothing alike. I used to have A newer version with the Ceramic, that I did not like (I loved the Gold color). It was a little too sizzly. This one sounds closer to my old 1988. Due to the differences, I am considering swapping out the Sterling pickup for an Alnico version.

That’s odd.

I think most sites suggest 1991-2008 Stingray 5s have ceramic pickups.


Maybe yours is older or newer ?

The original SR5s came with Alnico, then ceramic, back to Alnico, and finally to neodymium.
