Stingray 5 Club!

That peach is a rare bird!

Thanks, it sure is!

This one popped up a few years ago in the Ernie Ball forum when a new user from Germany asked for help to identify some unusual appointments on his StingRay5, starting a lively discussion:

A.J. from EBMM Customer Service then forwarded the photos to their chief design engineer, Dudley Gimpel, who authenticated it as a SR5 prototype.

The owner didn't want to sell initially but eventually I bought it from him last year.

I'm somewhat addicted to the Peach finish. Made between 1987 and 1989, in very small numbers. I also have a 1988 SR4, another SR5 (1989) and also a 1988 Sabre. Those took me years to find. The Peach Sabre is probably the rarest of the lot, I've only ever seen one other - the one Tony Levin is playing in the Peter Gabriel Live in Athens 1987 concert. There's some great footage in that film of Mr Levin with a whole bunch of fantastic Music Man basses!

Tony's burned up in a fire a few years ago along with some other really interesting basses. I saw (and smelled) it in San Luis Obispo in....2005, I think. He also had a different name for the finish, and it wasn't peach; it had to do with the naughty bits of Barbie, the doll. And I probably can be no more specific than that.

Peter Gabriel and T Levin named it “Barbie Flesh”

After all these very rare basses, here's my bog standard ceramic SR5 from 2003. This bass has a monster tone and is still probably my favourite.

.... with its very near relative - well about a month in 2003 and within the same couple of hundred serials

Thanks for the info, I didn't know Tony's Peach Sabre was damaged (lost?) in a fire. What a shame - such a sweet looking bass in that concert footage! Sounds great too, but anything in his hands would...

What strings do folks here
prefer on your Stingray 5?
Just picked up that 88 Sr5 in the classifieds..(big thanks to Bardolphus!) killer sounding/playing Sr5.! Generally I love about any steel or nickel roundwound string by DR. or D’Addario.. most likely I’ll run 45-130’s,I just haven’t decided on which brand for my Stingray 5.

I can't remember if I told you (and don't think I did) - those are some fairly worn in Elixir nickel plated steels on that bass in the typical EBMM gauge - 45 65 80 100 130.
