Stingray aftermarket 2 band pre

Could it be to do with using the 250K pot as a volume control before the preamp?

Also, how have you set your onboard surface mount pot for the volume, maybe try tweaking that?



Stealth, if you want to have a simple tone control that only works in passive mode. See the black "V" shaped wire on the active passive switch in Domdec's schematic. You could add a passive tone control to either of those points.



I'm probably being useless again, but I'm having trouble finding the 1M RA pots. Might just use the resistor trick. Anyone tried a 1M linear pot in that position.

Only other thing I'm having trouble with now is the 500pF cap, will probably just use a 470pF there tho.

I got my pots at Mouser. $1.50 ea. Invalid Link Removed
They also have the 500pf mica caps Invalid Link Removed If you want anoher type of cap like ceramic or film you can do a search
 
I couldn't find anything on Farnell, I'm not too keen on using mouser because unless I spend over £50, the postage is going to be about £12, which'll be higher than the cost of the components :(

yeah Mouser screws you with ridiculous shipping costs. I only used them once. I bought three 1M rev pots in one shipment so I wouldn't have to use them again. they are the only company I found that has the knurled shaft ones

it looks amazing, and drilled too. Fantastic job. thank you!!!! I've got a busy few weeks but that gives me time to get the components and within a month I should be able to set aside a morning to assemble the thing (note to self: easy on the caffeine, the preamp is small :) ) and have a play.

I'll post pictures and soundclips. This is going to go into my black OLP

What did you have in place of the 25K pot before?

Got a picture of the preamp, incase anyone can spot anything?

Since I had a passive volume placed before the preamp, I bypassed the 25k volume pot on the stingray diagram. But the preamp is acting the same with both the 250k and 25k volume pots so I don't think that's the problem. I don't have a camera right now, but I'll get pictures up as soon as I can.

I built 3 of these preamps and they are all louder than the bypassed signal. did you test the components before soldering? something might be way out of spec. 1 out of 30 components I buy is way off, it happens
 
Problem solved! I looked over the board again and noticed that I accidentally swapped the 10k and 100k resistors. They're only one color band off so I can see how I did that. Oops. Anyways, the preamp is working as it should, and the bass sounds great now. I couldn't be happier with it. Thanks UncleFluffy and anyone who helped me.

Great news, and I'm also glad to hear it's not just me who has difficulty telling the difference between brown-black-yellow and brown-black-orange when the stripes get so small.

glad you found the problem. I kinda figured something was out of spec on the board. I soldered the wrong component before so I have a system now where I check the component before insertion and again before soldering. then I check the solder joint with a magnifying glass. :cool:
 
Got it mostly done, I'm waiting on some cloth insulated wire (my favorite look in an instrument) to finish and test. I thought I had some metal film 1% 2.2M, but I didn't so I just metered out two 5% that were within 1%. I also metered out caps that were all within 1% so this thing is pretty close to perfect as far as component values.

I don't think this is a hard build even for a beginner. The pads my be a bit tiny for the best results on your average radioshack pencil iron unless you have a brand new tip on it. You have my respect if you can get good results with one of those 70-100W 'buzz guns' cause I wouldn't even try it with one of those. I really recommend wiping the solder side of the board off with alcohol if you handled it directly, this will sometimes help in soldering smaller things. (95% of the time you'll be fine without doing that, but that 5% of the time it would have helped is usually right when its too hard to do or you already have a bad solder joint)
