Being new to the DIY world, I need all the help I can get. I'm in the middle of my preamp build and would like some suggestions on the 120pf cap. I purchased the one from the parts lists on the forum and it is way too large in this installation. I don't like the way it looks on my board, and wondering if anyone has a smaller/compact replacement. In using the cap above, I also had to clean the mounting holes out to .032 with a pin vise drill, to allow for the large leads. I really don't want that to be a problem in a build.

I've seen other pics in the topic that look a lot better. Any help on part numbers and sources would be appreciated. Something more to these in post #320 on page 16 and post #265 on page 14.

From what I can see, you have a 120pf cap rated at 1000V, hence the generous proportions. No need to use such high voltage spec, a 120pf rated at, say, 50V would be much smaller (terminals included) and perfectly safe to use. I also suspect that the one you've already soldered is also a high voltage cap. Otherwise, looking good!! Good luck with it!

Caps + resistors on the way.

One point on that board - it looks like the 500pF cap is soldered between two of the off-board connections rather than between the two electrolytics. The markings might have confused things a bit there, the rectangle with the two 'T' shapes is the capacitor. The "500pF" text is a little further away than for some of the other components to avoid the holes.

Thanks UncleFluffy. Yes, you are right about the cap being in the wrong spot. I found that out when soldering up another board yesterday.

I got my package from DigiKey also with the parts you had listed in the other thread and loaded a board with them. As you can see, the components are somewhat more compact than my first try. Also received some 22 gauge hookup wire, so I will try to get a stompbox wired up soon, can't wait to hear it, but family comes first.

Just thought I'd bump this back up.

I lost my job so spending money on circuit components can't take place at the moment

I'd planned to buy a whole new control plate, and add sockets to the wires coming to and from the pickup so I could just replace the whole unit and just plug it in without any additional soldering (I think I saw that done somewhere earlier in this thread, so whoever it was, thanks for the awesome idea!)

I just ordered all of the parts for my board. I ordered all of the PCB parts from Digi-Key including the opamp. I was able to find all of the pots (16mm Alpha) for $1.25 each at Invalid Link Removed along with a 9V battery snap and spring clip holder. I'll post photos when I get my build completed. I'm going to install it into a MusicMan SUB5.

BTW, has anyone tried this clone preamp with any of the Nordstrand MM pickups? I'm thinking about replacing the stock pickup with a Nordy.

I have a Nordy MM4.2 in my SR4 Fretless, so as soon as mine is built, I'll be sure to post some info about it!

Well I'm having problems with my preamp. I don't have any output differences when turning the volume and treble pots. The bass pot will increase/decrease the boost when turned. I got on/off switching instead of using a stereo jack, that is only the difference in the wiring setup. I've checked the board for proper loaded parts and the wiring seems to be going to the right places. Do ya'll have any troubleshooting insight as to the problem.

Used bajaman's wiring hookup, but don't understand his "bottom" or "top" terms for the lugs on the pots. Got the wiper part OK, Lug 1=top, 2=wiper,and 3=bottom? Any help would be appreciated, as a newb to stompbox stuff

i.e. are all three lugs connected, one outer one to ground, the other outer one to the preamp output, and the middle one to your output jack?

top = the lug that the wiper is pressed up against when the pot is turned "all the way up"

bottom = the lug that the wiper is pressed up against when the pot is turned "all the way down"

Yes, it's shown on the schematic here:

The ground is the thick black line at the bottom. It's not shown on the layout diagram as it's an off-board connection.

i've also found that a 25K linear volume pot gives a better and more useable taper than an audio one, and E ball seems to think so too, since that's what they're using on their new 2 band rays.

Well, I finally got some free time to fire up the iron and solder up my board. I didn't have time to solder the wires but I'll probably do that tonight or tomorrow evening. I'm looking forward to hearing this puppy in action!
