Stingray aftermarket 2 band pre

Here's mine. I'm still missing a couple of caps and the wires, etc.

Actually not all that bad. It just has too much solder on the connections. Get a wet sponge and use it to clean all the solder off the soldering iron tip. Then reheat each connecting drawing the excess solder onto the iron. Clean the iron and repeat. Should come out looking great. Less solder helps keep close terminals from getting solder bridges and shorting out too.

I have an ABG that has some sort of passive pickup that has a very, very low output. Even with my Electronix Submarine maxed out, it's pretty week. I have to crank it some more with another pedal to get decent volume. I don't want to start hacking into it, so I'd like to build a very hot preamp for it.

the pickup covers were made from white stingray pickup covers, only i removed their 3 side mounted tabs and added a fourth one to the top and bottom of the pickup.
here's a closeup pic of one:

the pickup is a Nordstand MM4.4 with the coils rearranged to enable a split P bass, reverse split P bass, and all coils on, in both series or parallel modes.

Ingenious. I wouldn't have thought to home brew the covers.

Do those different configs on the Nordstrand sound different enough and usable enough? I was kind of thinking an HH set with those would be pretty outrageous. Could get Stingray, P and Jazz tones all in one.

i think that they do. the split p mode sounds ALOT more like a p bass than when it's just a straight, side by side coil (which sounds more like a jazz or a single coil p bass).

Well I just finished my version in pedal form and it sounds really good! However, it does clip a little when I run my P/J bass through it... I'm guessing that this is caused by a different (higher?) pickup impedance than on a Ray with a single pickup. Is there something that can be done to give the circuit more headroom?
