Stingray aftermarket 2 band pre

Would you happen to have the Mouser part numbers for these that you can post, please? Mouser almost has too much stuff which makes their site a pain sometimes.

I didn't want a linear volume pot so I never searched for it. The treble pot is PC mount but the pins are far enough apart to glob the solder

Mouser, Jamesco and Digi-key have tons of everything but sometimes their online catalog can be such a pain to find anything. Of course I was spec-ing CTS which didn't seem to come up with much of anything.
 
Hello my name is Jeff. I forwarded the link of this thread to the gentleman who builds these.

In his defense he wanted to point out

"that the size of the board is about a U.S. nickel in height by about two nickels width in order to fit a small bass guitar cavity (1" x 1.5"). 16 components one of them an 8 legged IC. The red circle in the photo is approx 1/8" (3.5mm) in diameter soldering 3 components together at an IC leg. All soldered by hand not wave soldered". He said this "you don't have to be a rocket scientist to solder one of these up but a good hand, a good eye and experience helps". "For the record I do not let anything past with a cold solder joint, void, or anything that would compromise the circuit. What you are seeing there is solder flux not solder overflow. There's nothing there out of the ordinary for a hand soldered board that size. There might be confusion compared to wave soldered boards that are a lot tighter in solder specs and cleaned of flux when the process is finished?"

He's been soldering for close to three decades, trained by the D.O.D. for work on missile defense and radar technologies. He's an ET not an EE. "EE's design circuits ET's build them and repair them". I myself would like to say that I have had hundreds of happy customers over the years and never a complaint until today. I know that there is a lot of happy Talk Bass forumites that could tell you as well. I personally think that the size of this photo is misleading and appears much larger than it really is. If the preamps photo was taken next to a penny I think the average soldering folk would be quite impressed with the mans work.

It's a fantastic bass preamp btw, and very well made I might add. ;)

I'm happy that you are defending the guy. And I will say to you that the work is not easy, but quite doable. The photos of board in question reveals sloppy workmanship. It just doesn't cut mustard, plain and simple.

If I were a waiter, I'd be defending the chef, too...but as a customer, I'd be sending the meal back to the kitchen.

It sucks that Mouser screws you on the shipping. The shipping was a minimum $6.50. Their site is so confusing it was hard to shop for other stuff I might need
 
It looks like this preamp wasn't a good deal after all. Since I had it I always used the effects loop for effects and everything sounded fine. I plugged in directly to a stompbox and got a low distorted signal. I checked the bass output jack with a multimeter and it read 7 volts! :eek: I rechecked all the wiring and didn't see any short circuits. looks like a cap is bad or there is a bad solder joint. since I'm new to mods I didn't check the output voltage after I installed it. oh well it was only $39 wasted. I hope none of my amps or effects were damaged from gettin slammed with 7 volts, the amperage was 38μ. :scowl:

That was brave, I'd have sent it back immediately after seeing that soldering.
 
FWIW I'm not having any success with mine either. Obviously there's the question of whether I "messed it up" by redoing the soldering, but I've tested all the continuities throughout the whole thing, and all of the solder joints look and test perfectly good. I've swapped in a compatible replacement IC, and now I'm to the point of swapping caps etc... no luck so far. Guess I can just replace all the components one by one. The one thing that would gall me though is if there had previously been a pile of excess solder that was forming a necessary bridge, where there is no printed trace or jumper on the board.

I got mine to work but I had no idea it was putting 7 - 8 volts into the amplifier. I'm surprised it didn't blow the amp. I tried putting 1uf and 10uf caps before the bass jack but it didn't work. all I got was a low signal with both caps :rollno:
 
is this board built according to a known schematic, or is it something they put together themselves?

it was acccording to this pre-EB StingRay preamp. the one they sent me has the same parts and layout. since the board looks pretty good I'm gonna attempt :hmm: to desolder it and replace all the parts. with my limited skills it might take a month :scowl:
