There's been a lot of wisdom dispensed here.
In the end I think more good will from this then any of us could ever have imagined.

Jai, I know you're pretty much covered for having something to play, but my offer is open-ended. I'm also watching out here in Houston...no sign of it yet.
No problem...next time I'm in ATL, we'll have to get together and have a drink. All that much better if I find out where you're playing beforehand and see you play as well!

According to the information you provided, we can offer a yearly minimum premium of $250. with no deductible. Coverage would be underwritten through Travelers Insurance or Hartford Insurance.
Our policy is very straight forward and covers anything that is not excluded. Coverage is excluded for governmental actions, nuclear hazard, war & military action, wear and tear, contraband, illegal transportation or trade, gradual deterioration, latent defect of repair or manufacture, mold, wet or dry rot, rust or corrosion, insects, vermin or rodents. Further explanation of these exclusions can be found on the Musical Instrument Coverage Form which is attached.
Coverage is WORLDWIDE for direct physical loss or damage due to theft, vandalism, collision, breakage, fire, flood, water damage, quake, etc. We will also cover devaluation of an instrument as the result of breakage. In other words, if an instrument is damaged, and its not a total loss, we will cover the cost of repair and any resulting difference in value from the original condition. Another important condition is if an instrument is stolen from an unattended automobile we require some visible sign of forced entry into the vehicle for coverage.
If you were interested in starting coverage, all I would need is copies of your appraisals fax, mailed or emailed to us along with your complete mailing address. If you do not have appraisals, we can still start coverage based on the list of items below.

1. I'm a part-time musician. Instruments are played at local clubs, and occasional events, such as weddings, private parties, block parties.
2. Instruments kept at a private residence, in a studio apartment I rent, which is under the same roof-footprint of the house. No alarm, dead bolt on door.
3. Instruments are not currently insured.

5. No. I did travel with my bass several years ago, and hand carried it on the plane to ensure its safety.

Thanks for the suggestion, although I think the small amount saved by having a deductible is worth having full coverage. Cost per month is $21... I'll just have to work a bit harder to fill the tip jar!

It's very sad the fact that J lost his B but it's really good that is has pointed us to insurance companies to have coverage for our gears.

I am in Philly and will also keep an eye out for it, and will pass this along to many of my bass player friends. Another friend of mine had his stolen, and we got it back in about 2 months. It was found at a Guitar Center in New Jersey. Guitar Center kept records of the seller and turned the info over to the police.
This thread is now the top google hit when searching for "Benavente scd".
In fact, the top 3 hits concern the theft.
This is probably a very good thing. We can help it along by putting links to
this thread on our web pages and blogs. Just wrap the words "Benavente scd"
in a link to this post, like this:

Wow J-raj. That Google thing is far out. Hope it surfaces at some point now, just so the thief can know that Google did him in!

J-raj, I can't really say anything that hasn't been said before but I share the same condolences and optimism the rest of the forum holds for the future of you and your bass.
I just wanted to say it's incredibly touching how close knit this community is. I also post on Sputnik music as well and when a bass gets stolen from a car it's just "haha, stupid bitch, left your stuff in the car lawlocaust!!?!?oneone".
Talkbass, however, there's an entire forum looking out for just one member. Extremely inspiring.

Like everyone else, I feel for you. I have been checking The Recycler ads here in California. I don't know if The Recycler is a national publication. Naturally, if I spot anything, you will be the first to know!!
