Stolen Benavente SCD5 - Atlanta

will Look here in Conyers, There are only a handful that have a pretty good selection on music gear. I'll also have a friend put a pic and info at Firehouse music. I agree with the post about the crack head, most will want to "move" it quickly so pawnshops are the 1st to look at, then used music stores. Check with Dirt Cheap music also....
Good luck and keep your head up, it's too unique to not have SOMEONE notice it.
Prayers are with ya

I wonder if it would be worth it to spend some of the reward money towards putting an ad with a color picture in some of the area newspapers... especially if you have an independent weekly newspaper like we have here in Hawaii. That way the ad is out there for a week, and the weekly papers tend to be read by students, musicians, etc. that are more likely to have heard of someone who has heard about the bass, or knows of the guy who may still have it, because it's not your typical and easily pawned Fender etc.

Try and set up a way for the person who had it to turn it in somewhere, like a music store, or a one of your fellow musician's place of business, and stress that no questions will be asked. As much as we all want to exact some sort of retribution on the thief, it is more important to let that person know that getting the bass back is the only priority, and in this case, "passing Go, and not going to Jail" is the card you're dealing...

If not in this case, then eventually Karma will catch up to this person... but for now calm heads need to prevail - make it known by ads, flyers, word-of-mouth etc., to whomever has the bass, that it's safe return is all that is being asked for...

Just my $.02, but want every avenue explored for the return of this beautiful bass...

Folks: there are 2 things we can do to try to turn J-Raj's nightmare into a positive thing. First, and most important, is to do whatever we can to find his bass! Second: spend a minute or 2 and get yourself gear insurance!

I insure all of my gear with Heritage Insurance, a broker who specializes in musical instrument insurance (mostly for symphony musicians, so they are very used to high-value instruments)

Their standard policy covers all kinds of loss, including loss by theft and accidental damage. It even covers depreciation in value caused by a repair. Heritage also allows you to set the replacement value of the instrument at the time you insure it. They are no expensive, either - $60 to $80 per year for $10K of coverage, if I recall correctly.

I can't say enough about them. One night, a nearly brand-new Alembic Series II of mine somehow fell off a guitar stand and the peghead snapped completely off. (It was the twin brother to the bass picutred as my avatar.) Without any hassles, and within about 2 weeks, Heritage paid me for the full replacement value of the bass and even let me keep the electronics and hardware, which are being used to build a replacement. How cool is that?

If you contact them, ask for Ellis and feel free to drop my name.

Amen to the below (and above). On first reading this I thought - I better check to see if my gear is covered once it leaves the house, as I'm using it for my business.

Lo and behold - with all the hassle of buying my first house and my wife being the brains of the bunch - I discovered that not only wasn't my gear insured but my house wasn't insured!!!!! I had taken out a mortgage repayment insurance and life insurance, and had actually requested building and contents insurance - but I guess I missed something, so for the past year my house and ALL my gear wasn't insured. Scary.

How much of a dumbass did I feel? (rhetorical question please)

Cool! Not that you just soiled yourself by figuring this out, but that J-Raj's nightmare, and this subsequent thread, maybe saved you from big trouble later. That's my hope: most homeowner's policies don't cover your basses and other gear, and most of don't have MI insurance, which means that most of us are disasters waiting to happen. Glad that Mr Hughes is now, or soon will be, off that list!

Great advice, thanks.... their website is straight-forward and professional. I'm emailing them today for a quote.

Just a thought.......I'd even kick in what I can afford, but with the reward $$ even thought it would be nice to use it to catch this Pr#ck, use it to replace the bass if the ins. doesn't cover it???? I mean look at the way GA deals with thieves. He'll probably get a LITTLE time, but released due to over crowding in fulton County, so what....maybe a month in jail, probation, or REHAB, by claiming a drug addiction. I'd rather see him get his a@@ whooped and get another bass......just a thought :hmm:

I have been in contact with Heritage Insurance and I'm in the process of getting a comprehensive quote for all of the remaining gear that I have. I'll post an amount that they are going to ask for the premium, granted it is going to be for living in ATL, near L5p.

As for a replacement bass, I'm still pretty unemployed, so I'm not even going to attempt starting another one with Chris or Brian, till I land a new day-gig.

This last 2 weeks have really been trying on my job search, wife relations and compromised my attention-span on a few gigs and rehearsals. I hope to get back to myself soon.

First response from their agent... my original email is below that.

Ian,
Thank you for showing interest in our musical instrument insurance program! After completing some questions below we will be able to supply you with a quotation. You may also want to visit us on the web at www.musicins.com to view our online insurance coverage forms.

1) How are the instruments used? Professionally? Collector?
a. If professional use, what type of venues are the instruments played at?

2) Where are the instruments kept when not being played out? (Ex. Home, Trailer, studio, dorm room, storage, etc.)
a. Is there security? What kind?

3) Are your instruments currently insured?

4) Have you had any previous losses to any of your instruments? If so, what kind of loss and what was the amount of the loss?

5) Do you plan on shipping or flying with your instruments this year?
a. If so, how often and do they go out of the country?

b. Is instrument placed in air cargo or do you buy a seat or are they hand carried?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to talking with you shortly. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me.

Subject: Heritage Inquiry from Website

Hello,

Your site was recommended by swood_de, a TalkBass forum member, and was mentioned in a thread regarding a fellow member's stolen bass. I've taken his advice, and am asking for a quote to insure my music gear.

Here are the items I'm interested in insuring:

Bass Guitars:
Roman and Blake 5-string bass w/custom Aero pickups......... $4800.00
Carvin LB75 5-string bass......... $900.00
Ibanez SR800 4-string w/custom Aero pickups...... $500.00
Michael Kelly ABG 4-string...... $479.00

Amplifiers:
Walter Woods ElectraCoustic Stereo.... $2250
Clarus Acoustic Image...........$599

Speaker Cabinets:
AccuGroove El Whappo Jr...... $1400.00
Euphonic Audio Wizzy..... $ 479.00

Combo Amp:
GK 150MBE...... $500.00

These prices reflect what I paid for the items, not what the replacement value is. Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Aloha,
Ian Chames

Members of the AFM can use the Marsh Affinity insurance. It is full replacement value and is covered at home or on the gig. As a reference they quote $20,000 worth of equipment at about $225 a year.

From the Insurance page on afm.org:

Equipment Insurance

* Claims based on actual replacement cost
* Coverage for theft
* Coverage for equipment when it's off premises or in transit
* Cost of this Plan is tax-deductible as a normal business expense

J-raj -

Good luck with the job hunt and the wife-relations. I'm sure these are trying times for you. If it's any comfort, remember that there's a lot of guys here rooting for you and wishing you the best. This truly is the brotherhood of bass. Onwards and upwards.

Thanks a bunch, it really means alot. I've been trying to keep myself busy with gigs and other music obligations, to take my mind off of things for a little while.
