Stoner / Doom Bassist Thread - Part 18

I figured you would have seen them a year or two ago when they played at the Cunard Center with BLS and a half dozen other crappy metal bands. I made the trip for that one. Clutch were wicked, the other bands were not, the after party at the seahorse was also pretty rad from what I remember.
We were actually in Long Island, NY that night watching Roger Waters do the Wall. I couldn't believe Clutch was actually going to be 5 minutes down the road from me and I wasn't going to be around. Roger Waters was the craziest thing I've ever seen though!

i thought black metal bands just use broken equipment from pawn shops and record in caves?

There's only one way to make a TRVE CVLT BM album. You walk deep into the woods on the night of the solstice, find a clearing where no birds sing, make a circle in chalk ground from the bones of a heretic, apply corpsepaint, hold a Boss Metalzone in your left hand, then chant in the forbidden tongues until the Elder Ones appear. If they find you worthy, then your album arrives by post in 6-8 weeks.

I chortled.

^ I should just buy it.

Laz, as for El Oso vs Rat Tail, I'd be interestexd in a shoot out too. Both are bass oriented so they should be in the same ball park, I'd imagine. Without owning a RT, I'd guess the RT is a little more sizzly in the top end (based on the circuit it is trying to emulate), which could probably be dialed down.

I like the idea of more awesome pedals, but I can't justify the expense of that right now. I got what I NEED for bass gear. There is a few things I want though. The Eden Tour DI looks sweet for a simple plug and play setup. The Gig-FX Sub Wah has got me drooling too. As for fuzz pedals, I still want to try some Fuzzrocious stuff. I also like what my delay can do, but it is obvious that it is made for guitar. It sounds almost computer like at times.

That would put it in a fairly different tonal realm than the Rat Tail, right off the bat. You can dial in the Rat Tail pretty bright if you want. Between the filter and low/high clipping controls and the way the gain affects the low and high end response, you can get the Rat Tail to be pretty cutting on the highs or really bassy and blown out sounding. I haven't heard anything bright from any of the El Oso samples online. So they might have some tonal overlap, but seems like there could also be some big differences.

I think it's more how hot a pickup is and how the input of the pedal reacts in that relation.

Interesting. I'm also not the biggest fan of hot pickups for guitar either. A lot of this will translate to bass, whether it is right or not ha ha.

Most of my current fuzz stable can handle just about anything I can throw at them

Without owning a RT, that is how I would guess they would compare with each other.

The El Oso seems to shine in the blend department. That's what it has that the Bass Big Muff did not (yes BBM can be blended, but not to the same extent or with as much control as the Oso).

For me, the Oso nails the BBM vibe that I was enjoying, but adds new dimensions with the blend knob. If you enjoyed the BBM's tone, you will enjoy the El Oso. I can get the same tone (IMO, a little better tone) I had with my BBM and the blend is really useful.
