Play what you can afford. We don't judge. My back up is a Squier P. My only issue is that it has a low-ish output. I swapped in new pups and it was still quiet. I just think the crappy body and neck wood rob some of the volume. But it is usable and plays fine.

The tuners kinda stink and there is no readily available replacement because the affinity basses use a weird size peg. If you are going to go el cheapo, I'd look into an SX or one of the new Xaviere basses. Of course a used Squier VM or CV might be an option as well. You may also find something older and different in the way of Peavey, Ibanez, Greco, Hondo, etc...

You'll get more bang for the buck going used and on occasion, you can find a used USA Peavey in the sub $200 range.

just the frequency content really, There was not a strong accent to it really. There is a guy from Fairfax county in our lab who also does not have a strong accent.

Glad the wizard is working out. She is fairly bassy, and I am not sure entirely why its so much more bassy than the GT120 it was originally paired with but could have just been that amp. I did install 3 different low end controls on that amp (voice, bass, resonance) so that could be one reason

if i was not so busy id be able to get you one of those, in some ways it sucks to backlogged

If you can handle a short scale, grab up one of those Mustangs. No output problems with those. I know you said you are looking at an Affinity series. The one I had needed to be tuned after every song. That was my reason for getting rid of it. Of course the fit and finish were consistent with the cost. Having owned both a SX and an Affinty Squier, I'd look into a SX again.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check out the rondo stuff. I work for a fender dealer and there's an affinity jazz sitting in the warehouse, that's why I'm looking into it. I tune to B with the bottom 4 strings of a 5 string set, so short scale probably won't work.

I'm been dreaming of a 5 string EBO for years. I don't want that dream to die yet. Plus, how much definition do we need for what we do?

Man I love my affinities. I've owned several Mexican and a japanese Fender, and a squier classic vibe. I sold or traded them all away and kept the affinities. They are cheap (I've gotten every Affin P for $50 or less. My bronco is also great and won out over my Japanese mustang, just great tone when modded with like $50 in parts.

Also Dixie Dave uses an affinity with old flats and sounds great. No lack in output.

IMO, the differences between different basses become damn near indistinguishable when using alot of distortion or effects. Maybe those cats who do the fancy clean **** it's different..but in my world, its hard to tell the difference between a cheapo bass with ****** pickups, and my USA Pbass, and my Custom bass w DiMarzios...it really starts to become more about the fuzz and amp/speaker combo than the bass..just my opinion...

I'm sort of with you for the most part, but some basses do better with fuzz and muscle than others. I love the way my warmoth jazz with dimarzio pickups sounds, but my first act delgada sounds so much better with fuzz and drive. To me at least. It just holds together better.

There are three things I look for in an instrument, playability, good wood and sustain. Everything else can be manipulated to sound the way you want, through pickup or amp change to changing the way or where you articulate to adding another fuzz but nothing will replace a great playing and sustaining instrument
