stoner/doom bassist thread part 2: suspicious smoke

So need some advice from my sludge brethren as I don't have much of an artist design mind. I made a thread here a couple weeks ago when I picked this bad boy up...

This thing was a freaking mess and barely playable, but after pulling that tape off, giving it a solid wax job, throwing on some chromes, adjusting the neck, giving it a good setup, sticking a keyring through the broken tuner head so I could tune the E string, etc, I ended up with a killer sounding, interesting looking explorer bass for $100. Now i just need to replace the tuners and put a new bridge on (E and A intonation screws are fully tightened and bass still isn't properly intonated).

I am thinking of doing a refin of this bass, as it being in it's original color really does nothing for the value of it. I've never done anything like this. I don't know if I'll have someone else do it or what, but I'm just looking for ideas. Possibly get some badass artwork done on the body. What do you guys think? Possibly a Venture Bros themed bass...

I had this bass in white. It was killer but I got out of my Gibson phase and sold it many moons ago.

I think white looked pretty cool on it. The bolt is silly but if you rock it without shame it can go from silly to brooooootallllzzz!!!11!!!!. It's all about the attitude.

Try some of the Way Huge pedals. I use the Pork Loin at times for some thick/fuzzy sound and it's awesome. By itself it's a little lacking on the bottom end, but going that into my Sansamp BDDI really seems to work.

I have a Big Muff Pi as well and it's... sitting in its box, safely away from my board.

best fuzz pedal ive ever used is the bluebeard. no low end loss, so much fuzz, and you can dial it all the way off and still get good grit if youre not looking for crazy fuzz.

You'll find most of us MD/VA'ers run or at least own a bluebeard. That pedal can do no wrong, other than the fact that it will punch every other pedal in your chain right in the face and tell them to go **** themselves. I've got mine to work with my octave and chorus pedals quite well so far. I never turn mine off when I play.

Save yourself some hassle and in theory money by lurking in the effects forum. You'll quickly pick up the basics for diagnosing your underfuzzed tone.

Anyone got some clips of the Bluebeard? The bassfuzz.com review doesn't do it justice I believe. A DI'd fuzz is not usually ideal, so something in a band mix or a mic'd cab would be cool to hear. I have a Grey Stache clone on the way, we'll see how that works.

If you go back to that post where I posted a bunch of sloppily played new songs we garage recorded I'm running a bluebeard the whole time there, although it's a bit hard to hear me. Once I get my SVT fixed I'd be more than happy to do a demo recording of just my bass rig.

Anyone got some clips of the Bluebeard? The bassfuzz.com review doesn't do it justice I believe. A DI'd fuzz is not usually ideal, so something in a band mix or a mic'd cab would be cool to hear. I have a Grey Stache clone on the way, we'll see how that works.

My real problem with the bassfuzz.com review is that he calls the Bluebeard a GGG tuned muff but JD Sleep from GGG allegedly copied the Bluebeard. I would have just preferred that he didn't mention the connection at all.

its a youtube demo I did a while back with a number of different fuzzes.. one is the bluebeard...
get one. its a keeper. Ive gone thru many many fuzzes, and the bluebeard has never left my board.

its my understanding the Stache is based off the Beard... hence the analogous names... (correct me if Im wrong) but they are very different animals for some reason, and I tend to think that while one can make a particular circuit or variant you wont necessarily get the same kinda sounds. I know Sonny tunes and plays each of his for a very particular feel, and I love it.. Not to knock what Ryan does at all I have had or do still have a number of his pedals and there are many a FIIIIIINE fuzzes out there that just arent the particular flavor I need in my cupboard.
