hey some of you guys use the short scale SG style basses right?
can anyone give me a rundown on the available options? epiphone, old gibsons? did tokai or ibanez ever make any copies? i'd love a cheaper model but it is important to have a professional sound i think. keen to string it up with some chromes too.
Ok, I'm currently on the search for the exact same bass. Here goes my spiel....
The Epi's are they way to go unless you're a collector or just want a real Gibby. The issue is the Epi's don't use a real mudbucker. The original mudbucker is about 25-35k it's a beast of a pickup, essentially slamming massive amounts of Low Mid grunt. As any guitarist knows going from singles to hums drops some highs and lows for a more concentrated midrange.
Anyways copper is expensive and it's my belief this is why epiphone cut corners and "cheated" on the epiphone EB-0. I used to have one and can say that without doubt. The new epi mudbucker is a measly like 2-4k barely even a pickup, housed in a giant chrome block. This pickup is then ran through a 250k tone and Volume with a big ass cap in the signal (none of it is wired to traditional gibson EB-0 standards). Thus the Epi sounds very muddy and "vintage", so people just say "well no ****, it's a mudbucker it should sound like that. But really it should be a grunting bass, Epi cheats and essentially strangles out everything but the low end so you're zero'd in on a pretty piss poor albeit "vintage" style tone.
Solution? Go on Ebay and get a Artec "sidewinder"mudbucker, they are like $15 shipped free. It's the true 30k pickup and it's literally the best reproduction mudbucker. Only other options are a black plastic dimarzio unit that's like $60+ or find a darkstar which isn't a real mudbucker and costs probably 10 times as much as the Artec. Get the artec and a couple 500k or 1meg audio pots for better taper and a less choking cap and wiring like gibson and you got a great bass. Also artec sells the bridge pickup, so you could get both and just route for a bridge pickup, and be SS and an EB-3.
Currently I have an ad up on craigslist searching for them, and I said only under $100, and I got two right at $100 so with the mods and new strings I'd stilll be under $160 for a new bass.
Edit: oh and my craigslist link was a black 4001 yr:200 rick for $700 obo. It got deleted within the hour of course.
