Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

Let me ketchup: when I was younger I loved Queen, Pink Floyd and most of my dads classic rock. Blood Mountain came out on my freshman year in HS, I also wanted to impress a girl who was a music buff and so I started to get into music and playing bass my sophomore year. PUNK PUNK PUNK ruled my life until senor year when I got into Mastodon, Death, The Melvins, ect.(good metal) My girlfriend got me into Led Zep and Black Sabbath. I went to a Mastodon show and Kylesa opened and BLEW MY MIND! Stoner rock/metal and Doom forever.
@ BBASEDUDE- keep her happy but keep your self in check to, I dont want to hear that a husband beat his wife with a 10lbs bass. Im not much help I know but I dont like talking about other people's money.
@ EYEBALL- I would write to fender and to the public(in vids/forums) about this issue.

I've been trying to focus my practice a little more on learning songs. I learned a ton about bass playing when I was cramming songs for a cover band, so I'm trying to get back to that attitude with songs for an imaginary doom cover band. It's not quite the same without the powerful motivator of embarrassment that showing up to band practice unable to play what you committed to, but it's better than noodling scales.

For as often as people mention "slow" as a major part of stoner/doom, I'm surprised at how fast some of it is. Not speedy, but grooving along at a good rhythm. I've been playing Wizard Fight by Weedeater a whole lot, and the little fill at the end of the verse riff is surprisingly speedy little double triplet number. I'm pulling it off with some raking and a hammer-on, but but I end up doing all the hammering with my pinky and it's giving me quite the work out.

I'm digging back into Dragonaut as well, working on the some of the breaks and the jammy solo bit at the end.

I really miss the pace my playing improved when I played with other people. Something about playing music with other people just makes it easier. (Or maybe I care less about mistakes.)

I have a hard time learning other peoples music, not as fun as making your own heavy riffs. For me playing with other people makes me improve because the people i play with are all better than me and its way more fun to jam than sitting at home.

A Beast & Centurion showed up at my house yesterday. Haven't had a whole lot of time with them yet but the Centurion seems like it'll be great for some stoner rock. The Beast, it's just an all around good time. Have to see how they do with the band on Friday. One song is definitely getting the Beast treatment. Pretty much what I bought it for...

The Doom Lords hath granted my pedals with life! By way of mini electricity storage devices...they all work flawlessly. And the delay has fixed the Micro Synth's abrupt end. I'm very impressed with my board, now it's time to put it on something nicer than a piece of carpet...like shag carpetting.

When taxes come back, I plan on buying back my old P-bass back and get some MOAR FUZZ!!! By way of Fuzzrocious Dark Driving or MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe.

Finally had a chance to play the new Drake Custom at practice tonight through my live rig (Traynor YBA-1 > Ampeg 810E). Holy crap does it sound great. The low end is really deep, tight and focused and it's got a nice growly top end to the tone. Light as a feature too, really easy on my back and shoulder. I'm still getting used to a narrower nut after playing my Precision for the better part of a year, but it plays comfortably and sounds great. It held up really well with some down tuning as well, kept a clear articulate tone and good string tension. I'm REALLY happy with it, money well spent.

Well I'm continuing my search for a drummer, my roommate won't be able to get a drumset anymore, or at least not for awhile. And all of my drummer friends either aren't interested or don't have drums as well.
