Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

I have a westone for sale ;). But on a serious note, if you spoil your wife and your the main bread winner, spoil yourself ( within reason as long as you can afford it) . I buy my wife just about anything she wants within reason and I buy about whatever I want for myself gear wise. I just got her a trip to Jamaica that I didn't go on cost me $2000 I have bought close to that in gear in the last year. So kinda a wash even though it's all my loot.

Edit: I didn't know their was a time frame and wouldn't use the ring as "leverage"

100% agree with this one. but my wife would be bummed if i somehow tried to say rather than upgrading my wedding ring i want a new bass of equal value(also considering how quickly i turn gear over).

but im with you ampegfuzz, if shes happy, buy whatever you want within reason.

My fiance had said something about when we can afford it getting a bass in the same ballpark as her engagement ring (paid $2k, appraised at $3.5k so think I did pretty good) but I have no interest in owning bass worth over $1000 let alone in the $2000 range. Now an amp, maybe that's a different story. I am not very materialistic but the engagement ring is one place where I did not fight her very much on how much we should spend as while it may be traditional based on common practice, it is a symbol and something she'll have the rest of her life and I didn't mind us spending the money on something very important to her.

If it's a matter of you vs her in terms of spending money on extraneous stuff, chances are by the sheer fact that you're a man and she's a woman she probably already spends more money lol. I think it's fair and important to keep something like that balanced. I also don't think it's out of line to expect a purchase for yourself in the same ballpark as the ring, but I wouldn't try to use it to guilt her into it.

Then again your situation is a bit different, where due to certain circumstances you require a specific type of bass due to your conditions. However it sounds a lot like your train of thought was something like... it looks like I need to custom order a bass. We spent x dollars several years ago on my wife, so I can justify my purchase. I would not approach it from that angle, but instead explain to her how much you enjoy playing bass and that to continue to do so you will need a lighter bass that will need to be custom made because something like that is not common.

OK, I see the other side of it too. The agreement was, she wanted a new ring, not she gets a ring and I get a bass. So, very valid. But, not to get too personal, we have been saving all our extra money for our baby on the way. Also, I don't get an "allowance". We put all our money in the bank and pay the bills. We both make about the same and most of what we make pays bills. And even after we pay off some looming bills, we got the new expense of a baby. I don't see this working out in my favor.

Sounds like you already have your answer, however if you have a tax return coming and the possibility to set aside some extra money every month maybe you could work it into your budget.

And don't bother using common sense and logic, I'm pretty sure women are programmed to ignore such arguments. I still get yelled at for buying new basses AFTER I've sold a bass to pay for it.

Liquidate all unneeded gear and maybe pick up a cover gig. I try not to use money I make a work for gear but my cover band situation has been thin for a while. I bought my first Ric on 8 months of cover band gigs. And it wasn't a every weekend type band.

My problem would be time. I have time for one band. I guess it's time to get serious about switching basses. I don't know if she understands how painful it is to play. Just sitting down for too long sucks.

I know that one of the big reasons I have do much gear and wife is spoiled( other then my good job) is that we don't have or want kids. It is alot of time, money, and responsibility to raise a child. Their is money to be had to put on a new bass without using the "family funds" just got to use that noodle. You'll figure something out.

Yeah don't piss the lady off, especially if she is with child. I imagine you will lose every argument. Since you have that parts p and the body is the only problem. Just buy another body from the classifieds. I got a nice and light white p body for $110 shipped. Find a light body, who cares if it's a squier as long as its decent wood and a finish you like. Or complain to the people you got the body from and request another.

"if you really love me, you'd allow me this one purchase. we both know that it is a necessity because of my back. music is my one outlet- please don't make me give it up because of back pain. we both know it's now or never because of the baby on the way."

i've been thinking about this too.

Sounds like you need to sit down and agree on a financial plan that works for both of you. Financial disagreement is the leading cause of divorce in America, it's something to be taken seriously. And trying to guilt trip her into spending money (which she'll resent) because you feel like the current budget is unfair (which you resent) is not a real good solution.

gold. I might word it a little different. :p

The problem with the neck is that it is a smaller heel than the fender standard heel shape. Otherwise, I would just buy a new body that was already finished from guitar fetish. Why offer a product as a kit and then not offer additional parts that are compatible. Haven't they ever heard of someone messing up before? I could do like another poster here did and cherry pick the parts from guitar fetish. That would be one cheap way to go. But, I am tired of cheap. All my gear is me settling on something because of cost. I wanted monolith and got the carvin for example.

Thankyou. We are very comfortable with each other. We get each other on every level except gear. I try showing her this place with some of the gear shots you guys post. Yeah, it has had no effect. ;)

OK, well that's enough of my dirty laundry. On with the Doom!
