Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

neurosis guys: what is your favorite album? it seems like everybody i talk to always enjoys a different album (which is cool but strange). i only have two albums and i have never been super into them but im really digging A Sun That Never Sets right now. im gonna snag Times of Grace sometime this week, but i just wanted opinions on what other albums i should check out (i have Through Silver and Blood too, its ok but drags a little bit IMO especially early on in the album).

Ironically, I didn't discover 'Stoner' until I got clean back in 1992. I'd pretty much given up on new music in general in the late 80's, with the exception of Faith No More, Soundgarden and death metal stuff like Celtic Frost.

The I saw Kyuss open for Faith No More at UC Davis in California.

Haven't needed a drug or a drink since then.

I'm sure mine is not the typical story, but I'm equally sure I'm not the only one...

How do you hand the volume difference between fingers and a pick? A pedal for volume cutting/boosting? Rolling back the volume on your bass? Something else?

most parts i do on clean are done with my fingers cause i dont like the bite you get from a pick, but anything with string attack is done with a pick. with as much fuzz as i use and being that i use my fingers only on clean, the volume difference doesnt really affect me.

Saw Neurosis last year at Maryland Deathfest and they played outdoors in the middle of a big ****ing thunder storm. It was surreal.

Their bassist was rocking an Ibanez RB924 which lead me to ending up with an RB950.

After feeling the staleness that punk has become for me, I decided to start listening to other music. I was already super into underground hip hop and punk rock. My dad was an old dirt rocker so we had a tape deck in the car and a tape case full of stuff like AC/DC, Sabbath, Aerosmith, Cream, Zeppelin, Dobbie Brothers, Van Halen, etc. I guess it started when a friend made me a Turbo Negro album. Then I started asking him about other bands. Got into Annihilation Time and Municipal Waste. Then I asked my buddy about more music. I asked, "what would be a the soundtrack to driving around with a shotgun, blowing people away." He recommends HoF and Black Cobra. Then he got me into Torche/Floor From there I learn about Sleep, and then Kyuss and the rest is history.

I think my favorite Neurosis album is A Sun That Never Sets, with Through Silver In Blood a close second.

Since everyone else is getting into it, my musical trajectory goes something like this: Dad's blues and classic rock albums as a kid (BB King, Stones, ZZ Top, Zepp, Allman Bros) > Thrash metal and classic heavy metal when I was in middle school (primarily Black Sabbath, Metallica and Slayer) and also got into different kinds of jazz from playing trumpet in school > punk and hardcore towards the end of high school then started playing in those kinds of bands for years > Played in punk and metal bands in my 20s and then discovered off shoot/crossover sub-genres like grindcore, sludge, etc. and then getting back into classic heavy metal and heavy blues I found doom metal, stoner rock and the myriad of related sounds. Tried to start different band within those genres for over 10 years with no luck beyond some demo tracks here and there, then joined Cold Mourning in 2010.

So tell me if my logic is screwed here. A few years ago when my wife and I went back to Florida for a visit. We ended up going by the jewelry store for an upgraded wedding ring set for her. When I originally bought the ring, I was only 19 so funds were limited and on this trip we had extra so we went ahead and pulled the plug. Now, several years later, I am not a jewelry man. I know the ring she got me wasn't more than the first ring I bought her. No big deal, I don't care about jewelry but now I'm thinking. We dropped over 3k on her newest ring. It was custom made top her specs. Am I out of line to ask for a bass? I am not trying to, but I tink she feels guilty about the $3k ring. What would you guys do? It's only fair, right?

All this came about when I realized that this GFS kit bass isn't the best quality (wood splinters when I sand it and it's looking pretty bad right now) and most other basses in a comfortable weight range cost considerably more than any of my current basses. (Have you seen the price on a Valenti or Lull?)

so what youre saying is because you upgraded your wifes wedding band/ring set for 3k long ago, now you want an upgrade on something and instead of it being your rings you want it being your bass?

not sure my wife would go for that lol.
