its funny i was talking about nu-metal with a friend of mine on the way to work this morning, we also got on the topic through discussing some episodes of Metal Evolution.
I was a huge nu metal fan in high school. I still dig some old KoRn albums if only for nostalgic purposes. Its hard to listen to any of that stuff now though because the lyrics are just so god awful. Teen angst arrrgghhh!
what is this "metal evolution" of which you speak?

I seen LB on some MTV party show and was like "these guys are kinda good" so i bought their album, 3 dollar bills or something like that. MTV still kinda played music then. Now its reality T.V., FAIL!!!!!!
The biggest thing i took from moo metal is the drop tuning stuff. Yes i know other people did it first, but how many of us went and bought a 5 string around this time or had buddies who had to have a 7 string.
i was actually in a band that obstinately stayed in E with the intent to be HEAVIER in standard than all the guys in drop....and our guitarist played a jazzmaster!....however....they all just thought we were weird.

Same guy, Sam Dunn, also did a TV series for VH1, 11 episodes...
I think he also did Beyond the Lighted Stage with Rush.

I agree with the statment of how I got into Stoner/Doom cause of it's similarities to Grunge.I can see that, especially for me. Yeah, I used to be an fan(atic) of The Deftones, but after "White Pony"(which was there best album musically), I wanted something new. And I still like LB's "$3 Bill, Ya'll" cause of how raw the music sounded, eventhough they were going for a hip-hop/metal sound. I was into Nu-metal when it first came through, but like everything else/every musical genre, gets bomb-barded with so many copy cats, and starts to suck/dilute, very quickly! I've been following the Metal Evolution series on VH1 Classic, and only disagree with 2 things. Pantera is, and always will be "Thrash", not Nu-Metal!!! And second, How the F!@# does Jerry Cantrell like Nickleback!!! *puke!
haha no worries dude, be proud, you can admit you enjoyed some nu! the biggest reason i enjoyed nu metal was some of the guys could sing very well IE chino. theres still some awesome nu metal melodies sprinkled in between bad chug riffs.
i never got very into the rap metal thing: limp bizkit, korn, primer 55, etc. whats funny is i got into sabbath when i like 12 or 13, and i somehow decided never to listen to any other bands that did the stoner riff thing. i still cant listen to most bands like that without comparing them to sabbath and realizing how much better sabbath is lol.
djent is an embarrassment. somehow people decided to wait like 10 years to start ripping off sikth and meshuggah. i guess the younger crowd thats into that still thinks its fresh and new, but man its sad when i hear bad chug riffs in odd times with a quarter note pulse on the crash cymbal and someone tells me how inventive it is.
speaking of djent, the newest thing to hit the streets: djent rap. everybody do yourselves a favor and check out Hacktivist. british band that does djent with rapping on it. im not even going to link them here because id feel dirty even pasting a link lol. but my god its bad.

Lol by that measure, neurosis is djent.
Djent is super stacatto riffs in odd time signatures or odd groupings. Coupled with a drum part that has a steady pulse up top with some other independent limb thing going on. Tons of guitar wanking with sweeping and other stuff. Its meshughah for scene kids.
Dont feel bad Sam, I didnt know either!..its either evidence of just how totally hip...OR...how totally UNhip we both are.....but im not sure which!
Music has started doing weird things since i fell out of "The scene" I keep discovering older bands i wish i would of known about back in the day. bands like The Melvins, Sleep, and Floor. I was late to the party for this genre.
