Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

Btw...its so weird how we each come from different places and end up in the same place. I seriously stayed WAY far away from nu-metal until it was kinda "over". The running joke with laz about "tough guy rock" is the reason why. Im old enough to have grown up in the time when punks didnt necessarily find themselves welcome among metal kids. In fact,.growing up wearing a circle jerks shirt meant that finding two or more guys wearing Megadeth or Priest shirts could get you really hassled....so when nu-metal came along all the guys I used to see hasslin my friends were now into nu-metal, or the Jocks that used to wanna beat up the "punk freaks" were...so for the longest time I ignored that whole genre as being for the d-bags that hassled people..hell, I wouldn't even listen to tool cos of some of these fans. It wasn't until a drummer in my band just kept pushin tool and deftones on me that I finally relented due to his otherwise good taste..it was kinda cool to kinda appreciate it in the same way I can appreciate the who....its probably a generational thing too, cos by the time you guys now in your twenties were getting into it there wasnt that divide anymore, so you didnt have the baggage I did.

I found doom through hard blues, I got into Black keys big time when Tighten Up came out and the fuzziness of that lead me to find more fuzzy forms of music...doom. The first song I heard was Sleep's Jerusalem, the walls grew fur, I felt fuzzy all over, my head was nodding and my mind was blown. I was and still am hooked. There's nothing like feedback, fuzz, and funky green stuff.

balrog, i was laughing at your post- it takes a lot more than that to ruffle my feathers.

laz, i have a buddy who used double-sided tape on his thumb rest a few years ago and it's still holding strong.

i just reorganized my pedal board, so i figured i'd post a pic since i now know how (i know i always like looking at gear).

Hes been my drummer since oct/nov and he loves the deftones but i guess i was way off! Haha. He does love his neurosis tho. Hes an awesome drummer too, perfect fit for us and has added a lot to our writing and overall sound.

I didn't get into music late, I didn't start playing bass until I was 18, but I got into grunge when I was 15 or so. Pretty much hung on to the grunge thing until my early 20s. I remember a friend of mine lending me Welcome to Sky Valley and I didn't understand or like the long instrumental passages, couldn't figure out why they noodled so much. It wasn't until years later that I finally got it. I can't remember exactly how I fell into stoner rock and doom, pretty sure it started with Clutch and it progressed from there, very slowly. I think Clutch was all I listened to for about 3 years, then got into Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Dozer and then whatever I could find on stonerrock.com. Such a huge genre, still discovering bands from 10-15 years ago like Black Nasa.

So bee, whats the band you guys have going? This is all news to me...me, him and Jamie did a black canary reunion and were "supposed" to play more but it never happened....

Ps.. Sorry if you already mentioned it previously, I have a very short term memory, AND I'm usually using the app, so I dont see sigs.

He joined the osedax when we lost our drummer last year. Were gonna do some pre production tracks with him soon, ill post em up when we finish.

I listened to pretty bad music until I was 18 then I went through a punk phase and then transitioned to Swedish melodic death metal. Weird transition I know. Didn't play bass until I was 20 (I'm 25). I was into some of the bigger stoner bands like kyuss qotsa clutch etc and a lot of the heavy ones like HOF. For 4 years or so I read every issue of Decibel magazine and pirated any album in any issue that sounded interesting.

Then the blackened death metal band I was in broke up and a friend in Isthmus/Questioner (same band that changed their name, look them up they are awesome) hooked me up with Billows (Old Crow at the time) and I fell in love with the music and scene and just can't enjoy new death metal anymore. My friends are always telling me to check out new albums and I don't even bother.

Now I've got a load of stoner and doom music and I'm still catching up on a lot of the classics. I still enjoy all my favorite death metal albums but don't enjoy new ones. They all sound the same to me. Our music just has so much more soul and feeling and damn do I enjoy it.

I grew up on Megadeth, Metallica, and Black Sabbath. Went through a punk phase about the time all the nu metal stuff was going on. Still like Deftones (mostly Adrenaline, didn't care for Around the Fur or most of White Pony and honestly haven't really listened since) and lurvs me some Tool. Although lets face it Tool isn't really nu metal, just got lumped in because of the time frame. Never owned a LB or Kid Rock album, and recently threw away all my Korn and RatM discs because I never listened to them.

Sleep's Dragonaut was the song that both made me want to be a bassist and got me into doom.

rage against the machines riffs are all stoner riffs just with not as much fuzz and not slowed down. its all minor pentatonic groove riffs. they groove so damn hard its beyond belief, their rhythm section brings it. you should have tried to get back into their first two albums. they just rehashed the same **** after those two, but self titled and evil empire bring the jamz x10.

I promised pics, so Im givin pics...

My "new" EHX Bass Micro Synth. When I bought, the workers told me that it may be rusty, but everything on the inside is completely redone by their tech, and the power is upgraded. The only 2 things I have to complain about it is that the effect ends per note pretty abruptly, hoping to correct that with the delay, and that the sub octave isn't very useful on the A and E strings. Otherwise a really cool pedal, and it's got some character.

^sucks about your pedal board^
It is possible to fry pedals from the power,by using a mis-matched power adapter.You haven't used a different one lately have you?
Or alternatively,you haven't tried to run too many pedals off the one power adapter?
Add up the milliamps of all your pedals and see if its below what the power adapter can handle.

As for how I got into stoner rock,well I would have to put that down to my dad.He used to own a record shop/roadie for a few bands.At age 10 he gave me Black Sabbaths first album,which blew my tiny mind apart.I started getting into music,and picked up guitar around 12,and of course lots of my friends were into Nirvana,which rubbed off onto me.At age 14,he said 'now I know you like Black Sabbath,so you might like Kyuss' and he showed me '...And The Circus Leaves Town'.Once again,life changing.Within 3 months,I had a bass guitar,stopped wearing shoes and stopped cutting my hair.When he showed me a Fu Manchu album,I put two and two together when I found out Brant Bjork was in both.So I started looking on the Internet to see what else members of Kyuss did,and got onto stonerobixxx.com.And the rest is history.
