Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

The pickups are hard to anchor on. They're very Gibson like with the ring bezel which is not very thick, and then the pickup cover with the square magnetic coils is a thin piece of metal and not comfortable to anchor on.
my new jazz bass came with a thumb rest... i used it for all of two minutes and took it off (along w/ a pup cover). the thumb rest was positioned way up by the neck, as if the person who owned it before me liked anchoring his/her finger on a mudbucker. i don't usually anchor my thumb anymore, but i could see where it would be nice if it went between the pups, ala juan alderete/tim commerford.
man, i just watched metal evolution: power metal... i just don't like that stuff. i've been following the series, and it got me thinking about how i ended up in the band i am in now: this isn't my full music history or anything like that, there's plenty of other stuff that i love that doesn't really matter to this thread. this is thombo editorial, so if no one reads it, it ain't no thing...
i was in 5th grade when Nevermind came out, and i loved 1st wave grunge, especially Soundgarden. the initial appeal of stoner rock was the psychedelic influence- Sleep and Kyuss just jamming! bands like that seemed like a natural trajectory from grunge. that also led me to bands like the melvins, isis, and neurosis. at that same time, i grew to like a lot of music with improv, occasionally rubbing shoulders with jambands (the majority of which i strongly dislike). tool somehow deserves mention in all of this too.
i love late 60's/70's stuff (zep, floyd, zappa, cream, sabbath, hendrix, the who, etc) up until the whole fantasy thing started to take hold (dio and rainbow is cool and all, but i have a limited tolerance for songs about magicians and dragons). i guess i drew the line when 70's excess and cocaine really crept into music. for me, even bands like pink floyd and the who went too far w/ the wall and tommy. i wasn't really into any 80's metal, accept for a few thrash bands that i got into during the 90's (though a lot of them start to sound the same). i hated 2nd wave grunge (as we all did), and hated nu metal (i can tolerate a little deftones if someone else throws it on).
while none of this really matters, it got me thinking that, based on non-doom posts on these threads, i think i came to this music differently than many of you.

You don't like songs about magicians and dragons, but you like a band that did a song about a guy on Mars riding his dragon into space? Puzzling...
Can't you wedge a pick between the pup and ring. I've done that before. But I bet comfort says your hand rests dead center on the bass. I would try to learn new technique before modding a clean vintage bass
fair enough. i guess i have to admit to hating based on music and non-music factors. i stumbled upon sleep and because the play their balls off: i didn't have any visual. music was 1st, band image/album covers second. w/ the mystical 70's stuff, it came the other way around. i can't picture pike wearing spandex, kneehigh heals, or anything with frills. infact, i don't know that i've ever seen him with a shirt on (hopefully no one looks too far into that

Well, I'm already replacing the broken bridge with a new Hipshot and getting a new nut cut! But you're right, I'll try it out after it's all fixed up first. When I first got my ATK I thought anchoring on that was annoying as hell but then I became very comfortable with it.
Deftones aren't nu-metal. They have been around since 89. Ya, I know they got lumped in with those groups and are cited as an influence by many of the nu-metal bands but I don't think that label is fair. Ya, I'm nitpicking but they have been my favorite band for years. I've been to numerous shows and even have two of Stephen's signature series guitars from ESP/LTD. I tend to think of them as artfully done metal. Not so much balls to the walls maybe softer metal? Maybe more intelligent metal? I don't know, I'm in the realm of subjective opinion already.

No offense intended, just struck me as funny.
sorry, the deftones were super nu metal, people just hate admitting it because they rule and people dont like saying they like a nu metal band. Around the Fur and Adrenaline are about as nu metal as it gets. theres whispering, rapping, bouncy riffs in drop D, and lots of nu whining.
they starting un-nu-ing themselves on white pony, but the deftones were definitely nu metal.
that being said, i loved nu metal in highschool and still can enjoy the oldies despite how awful it is, but the deftones were knee deep in it.
100% agreed, but i always find it funny when people just try and pretend they werent kings of nu. hell look at pictures of the band from the mid 90s/early 2000s. if the word "deftones" wasnt at the bottom theyd be mistaken for about 100 different bands on ozzfest for half a decade.
somehow they came out unscathed and kept all their cred, despite all their nu metal tendencies. it truly is unreal.
Well I now have a problem, my pedals dont work, I thought it was the 9v power cord but I got another today and that still didnt work, I tried a different outlet, nothing. I use the input and output of my Boss tuner to power my other pedals and I tried hooking up the power source straight to a different pedal to rule out that just the boss is broke, but none of my pedals work...save for the Big Muff, keep a battery in that ALWAYS, and the Micro Synth because that has its own power cord. Is it possible to fry pedals? Or any troubleshooting opinions?
Your probably right and I'm just being defensive. They are my favorite band and I guess they are....nu-metal. I need to go start a support group; nu-metal anonymous.
