I don't mind the feel of flats, just find them too clanky. I enjoy tapewounds more, but prefer Fender tapewounds as they sound closest to roundwounds, have higher tension than Daddario tapewounds, but remove the zingyness and the finger noise, they are dirt cheap too, but I would pay much more for them. Plus they are black!!!

Glad I'm not the only who thought so! I wasn't game to try the muff into the amp - the look on my mate's face was terrifying. I'm gunna try my pedal rig through my amp later today and make sure it isn't the Muff playing up.

chromes, thicker gauge 4 string set for C standard. while the low fundamental is ****ing massssiiiive and i've set my rig up to handle flats, there's that ric gnarl i'm missing out on a bit with trebly strings. El Padrino by church of misery is a good example.

they sound amazing to me, but i am using a rick with them - there's no hiding that fairly extreme treble bite, it just isn't as present with flats and i feel like that's to my detriment right now.

flats always sound.....flat to me. theres no snap to them, they just sound dead.

i guess they always irked me cause its impossible to get good slap tone out of them, and obviously theyre not meant for that lol. but if i cant pick up a bass and even attempt to get black on it, its getting put back.

Our productivity with songwriting is pretty much directly related to how often we practice consecutively. Once we really started going with a full lineup, we had 2 songs finished and one half done in 4 practices. Then we missed a few weeks, then were playing catchup just remembering and tightening everything back up. We're back to practicing regularly again now and last night we were on a hot streak. I write riffs like crazy and the chemistry with all of us in the room is great for coming up with ideas and playing around with stuff, so as long as we have momentum we're hauling a$$ with the writing. I'm really hoping to have a proper demo recorded within the next month or two.


In non music related goings on...today was arts and crafts day. Started working on my weathered tome project. I just got the faux leather covering part done, need to start painting it next. Not sure if I'm going to do that tonight or wait until tomorrow.

Whatsup guys. I figured this would be the right place to ask a question about writing some doom bass lines... every time i try to make some doomy stuff it comes out sounding to fast. So basically my question is, is there a method any of you use to come up with stuff? Im going for an Electric Wizard mixed with a more sludge type High on Fire feel. Any advice?

If you get a wild hair try roto flats. I really like the tone and feel. But i didn't know pretty much all flats have a little less output to them. It caused my Ric to act funny with my filter. Dirt and phase still sound fine. They sounds great with no issues on my P bass

Other then they don't drive the front of an amp as well when it has rounds on instead.

If your not playing with anyone try to play with a slower drum or click track.

Hmmm, I've been curious about tape wounds for awhile. I thought they were a lot more expensive. I'm gonna order a set. Maybe put em on my jazz. Damn Talkbass, it never fails to get my wallet open.

Ran the Blowtorch + Big Muff combo into two different amps/cabs (Eminar + 2x15, Behringer + 4x12) tonight, got the same farting noise on the attack of the notes. Think I might be pushing things a teensy bit too hard. It sounds good with the band - apart from when it farts out - but by itself not so good... So I think I might need to swap the NYC Muff out for something else.

Any suggestions for a fuzz to stack on top of a blended fuzz that's gunna distort further but hold back from destroying note definition further? Maybe a less gain-y Muff variant?

What you may want to try is using a distortion or overdrive before the Blowtorch. I run a Joyo Ultimate Drive before my Bass Big Muff and love it, so I have a bit of overdrive that stays punchy with a nice fuzz around that.

The joyo is a very underrated pedal. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting an ocd tone with a tight budget. If you can afford a boutique version, go that way. But the joyo is a wallet friendly alternative.

A tube screamer or bluesdriver can also get you into "slight hair" territory. Is this for your bass or guitar setup?
