I'm purposefully holding myself back, but yeah. I never had any interest in them before. I've known a couple people who had them, I even recorded once with one. Maybe the weight, maybe something about the look, maybe the price, I never had any GAS for one. I bought the SBMM on a whim, to try something different. It's definitely a statement for how much I like it that my #1 driving priority in basses over the last 2 years has been light weight and now I'm thinking about buying an EBMM. Never gigged the Carvin because of it being about 9.75 lbs, bought the Drake because I had a guarantee it would be 8 lbs...the Ray34CA has to be at least 10 lbs and I'm just diverging to the "well, maybe I just need to start working out again and get massages once in a while" thread of thinking. My shoulders are in knots today from playing it for 4 hours on Saturday and I'm majorly fighting some EBMM Ray Classic GAS. Even thought about doing a Warmoth build, Precision body, Jazz neck, Stingray pickup and some boutique 2 band preamp or even having Drake make me something with a Nordstrand MM pickup in the future. It's f*cking ridiculous. I'm ridiculous. This is nothing new, I'm a sick man.

No matter what, no major purchases are happening until I'm done with current projects. Dunwich preamp is going forward, lightweight power amp after that, already budgeted and in progress. I thought I had my basses for all my currently running music projects sorted. Precision for Cold Mourning in Eb (although that band has been a constant gear shuffle), SB4000 for Mental Waste in drop D, Ray34CA for the new grindcore thing in B and double one of those or use the Drake for the new (potential) stoner rock band, depending on the tuning. Loving the Stringray f*cked that up good, I'm wanting to use it on everything except Mental Waste now. I like my setup for that band perfectly, I'm not tinkering with it.

So lately I've been having a few issues with my setup as of late. I currently use a P-Bass Tuned BEAD using an EMG alnico P-bass setup for pickups. It sounds great and is uber quiet but the lower notes (d# down to B) don't resonate and are not as powerful as any notes above them. I understand this is a 34" scale bass so the B will never be as great as a 35" bass. So our guitar player brought me his EB MM5 HH to clean up and setup so i decided to try it at band practice yesterday. It fixed many of the issues I've had, such as volume before clipping (the output is huge in comparison to my P) but that was mainly when I had the low eq on the bass cranked. Great tone clean, but it did not play well with my pedals at all (aside from the megalith). So I've been pondering what i could do to my P to get it like the EB but have it play well with pedals, here are my ideas.

1) Convert the P back to being a passive bass (i have everything to do this prewired and ready to slap in). Then pickup an MXR 10 band EQ (it has the frequencies I would want to sculpt more then the 6 band) to crank the low end and increase the level of the signal to that of an active bass, without changing the impedance, thus maintaining the interaction with my pedals. I would also with this setup sell / trade my megalith for a verellen big spider (I love the ML but it just doesnt blend as well with my band as the BS did).

2) Buy an EMG BTC to replace the tone pot on my P so i can crank the bass and output level. This would render the EQ pointless, but at the same time make my tectonic shift pretty much useless (the super fuzz side does not like active basses at all). So I would keep the ML and replace the TS with the BS and probably a bluebeard (to keep mah muff tonezes).

Option 1 would keep me from having to replace batteries in the bass, and definitely have a more vintage tone. Option 2 would have more upkeep but have a high output more modern tone....

Try to find a preamp that has a adjustable gain control maybe?

its ~2.75" diameter, 1.1" tall. Perfect for this app.

unloaded voltage calcs give ~68V assuming ideal 115V input, will probably increase to 70+ with a 120V primary. Which is all good, the original stated 72V i think.

That was option #2, the EMG BTC has the active bass control. That was the only huge difference maker between the EB and my P was it sounded so much more full and the low B sounded better with the bass cranked on the EB. With EQ flat the EB and my P were very very close tone wise in the low B department.

yea $10 + ship PT can bitch, 10VA rating, way overspec

also Bass DI wont that handle this?

Nope this is all stuff that needs to happen pre-DI. Kinda like the same reason we put 3 different bass controls into the Naki. Different stages need different degrees of low end, if i do end up going the EQ route (which its looking like I will be doing), it's honestly just just going to be a bass boost, mids and highs will stay flat. The preamp is going post dirt and effects, and I want the low end in there to hit my pedals with the massiveness. Kind of like in the Naki having the FAC as the first thing the signal sees, and then onto the tone stack and effects, except this time it would be before the dirt instead of after.
