Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread Part 11 - "Bath Time"

A real question for the masses!

I'm looking for music blogs that
A.) cover this genre of music, new releases and news, and provide some demo tracks for listening, and more importantly...
B.) provide demo tracks that are uploaded internally, not through Youtube/Myspace/Soundcloud. The issue is that the corporate work filters deny access to typical popular media sites, so blogs that embed YT videos don't appear for me.

I know I used to read different music blogs that would have their own flash player embedded, they received music direct from new upstart bands so they hosted all the content themselves. I'm looking for a similar blog source but in the stoner/doom world.

Cool I'll check out The Soda Shop, never heard of that one.

So... Speakon cables are mad expensive huh? Do we have a resident TB'er who makes them for people on demand? If I order wire and jacks and make myself a pair, I see no reason why I wouldnt get a whole spool of 14 gauge and 100 or so jacks and provide custom Speakons to the TB masses. If it hasnt been done yet, I may go start an Angelfire page for my new "business" yuk yuk

Budget is about $1000. I could go a few hundred over, but I'd prefer not to if possible. With the Model T's, obviously used is the only option, but I'd be going used anyway.

I've heard both the reissue and the vintage T at concerts, and really liked the sounds, but I didn't see what effects the guitarists were running in front of them.

This head would be fulfilling four functions, essentially.

1. Recording amp for when I want to record guitar parts and such.
2. Rehearsal space amp probably for one of my bands that's sorta black metal-ish in case we want to jam with people, recruit a second guitarist (which we'll soon be in the process of), in case I want to work on guitar parts with the guitarist, etc. Basically a second guitar amp for whatever we need one for at the rehearsal space. We play pretty loud.
3. Possibly be part of a stereo rig with my 4001 (neck pickup -> bass rig, clean; bridge pickup -> guitar rig, dirty)
4. In case I ever want to do anything serious myself as a guitarist in a band.

So, I don't want a head that's so powerful it can never get really overdriven, but I also don't want one too weak to keep up with a loud band. Plus I do really like the sounds of the T's, from what I've heard, though the vintage one I guess can't really get dirty without a pedal in front.

You can get VERY nice tones out of amps that won't cost an arm and a leg.

You HAVE to have tubes? You can get anything from a 5 watt Marshall Class 5 (awesome amp) to sky's-the-limit Dumbles/Bogners/Diezel/insert spendy amp name here.

You want Marshall/Mesa grind in a thin budget, go with a Tech 21 Trademark 10/30/60. I have the 10 watter and it is a VERY good sounding amp for OD. Not so much for clean.

Anothe low-wattage choice is the newer Fender Super Champ. I saw a video of Dinosaur Jr. playing in their reheasal spot and J. was using one of these mic'd up, and sounded killer. All tube w/digital sims.

I'm not a huge fan of Line 6 stuff, it just sounds a little too processed for me, YMMV.

Yeah... I've heard a lot of Line 6 stuff... pretty much not an option.

Would like to have tubes. I mean, the Tech 21 thing is an option, but I'd really like the real thing.

Also, while I'm sorta open to combos, I'd probably be taking the head portion out of the combo and putting it in a head box, since I've already got a cab and will soon have a couple more (building a couple cabs to use the speakers that came out of the 1200S cab I converted to a 2000S cab).

Did some research for my little brother in law awhile back and talked him into grabbing one of these off CL and was really impressed by it. Plus depending on your budget/desire for speaker area there are different models to look in to.

I do like me some Peavey, but my friend had the classic, if we're talking about the same head, and it's too clean.

I'd go with a Mesa Express 5/50 head, with the high power, low power switch. Run it as a combo at 5 watts for recording, or run it through your cab at 50 watts for jamming/gigging.

I'd go with the vintage Model T as well, unlike the the reissues, it can run at 2 ohms, that's a big plus.


And that Ric-o-sound setup sounds like a killer rig.

i'm not sure if there is anyone around like that, but it might unnecessary. speakon cables are super easy to make- the wires connect w/ screws instead of solder. While you can buy the cable by the foot, I usually just chop up an old speaker cable to size. when i've needed 1/4" to speakon, i just hack off one side and add the speakon.
