Tapes are pure misplaced nostalgia. I've given my rant at least twice in previous threads. It's a demand driven by a group of people who were too young to actually have tapes as their main commercially available musical format. Plus, they don't have to rely on ONLY having that. So they have no idea how much it sucks. They've never had a wobble in the same spot on their favorite song, heard static creeping up randomly because something magnetic was near it or had to fix a tangled, unspooled or broken tape. I grew up with vinyl as a child, tapes in my adolescence and CDs in my teen years and I HATE TAPES. I see the benefit of records, CDs and digital formats. Tape is terrible and I don't think it has any redeeming qualities. The only reason to have one is if you only have a tape player and no one here (or ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET) has that problem.

Don't forget to purchase your limited edition Mental Waste "Meltdown" cassette EP, from an obscure European tape distro near you!

I grew up with tapes, and sure they got eaten and you had to rewind them with a pencil, and then they wore out from playing the same songs over and over... However I've said ti before and I'll say it again... they had their benefits.
1.) No skipping while skating, or riding the bus to school.
2.) Ease of dubbing and over dubbing tapes including the ability to tape albums and make them portable... since the portable turntable hasn't really come into fruition yet.
3.) So easy to stick a mic next to the TV and pull songs of MTV when they actually played decent music...

1. No skipping is just comparing tapes to CDs. MP3s don't skip and this really just has to do with the time period tapes were popular.
2. This can also be done digitally.
3. This can also be done digitally.

None of these points really attest to why tapes are a good medium, they are just things you could do with them =P

SO, can we all agree? Releasing a cassette tape is for nothing more than the exclusiveness of having a cassette tape? Exclusive=Hipster? Like you aren't in the Kool Klub? Oh well. I have yet to hear a valid reason to release a tape, so for the meantime I am writing cassettes off as nothing more than an attempt to be cool. (unless you actually have a tape player in your car, but even then, they make those CD to tape player things to run a CD player....)

I think the idea is kind of dumb, but it doesn't offend me if people want to do it. I don't think it is necessarily hipster, although that is probably mostly the case. If someone wants to do it why the hell do I care =P

Are your fans asking for cassettes? CDs? Vinyl? Digital media?

I'd give people what they want, rather than going back to your band saying "well, TB says they're for hipster wannabe losers, so I vote we don't do it."

Do a cost benefit analysis, see what your fans would be willing to pay, and give them media how they want it. Personally, the only media I'd pay top dollar for would be a vinyl that included a keycode or something to access a digital internet copy. Best of both worlds, you get something cool and "physical" while also getting the highest quality format.

Just anecdotal, if your fanbase is largely 16-25 year olds with no money, theres a good chance their '96 Accord has a tape player. Also a good chance they inherited their dad's old record player. There, theres your answers to your questions.

This is the only thing I care about from a band perspective. I have my personal opinions that inform MY purchases, but if I'm releasing music for sale and people are asking for a specific format, that's what I'll release it on.

I would buy an Om cassette, if it was >$10. My car still has a player so why not, theyre my favorite band

I see your point of giving the fans what they want. Maybe a bunch of fans were like, you know what would make this listening experience better? A cassette tape. (something an audiophile would never say)

and before somebody goes off on how amazing they sound and this and that, just remember vinyl is hip right now, just like anything else that is not the norm. theres a reason records died out long ago, and are currently making a comeback (because theyre big, fun, and cool)

-> I think the fact that most records come with a digital download has seriously helped this resurgence. Vinyl used to be a labor of love.. having to sit still, and get up every few minuted to flip it... No people have the option of buying it to collect, downloading the files, and never putting a needle to the wax. I like collecting, but I like to bring life to my toys...

Wasn't trying to sell anyone on tapes, Mp3's obviously allow the most versatility and ease of use NOW, but when the choices were Tape or CD... I favored tapes for quite a while (mostly because i couldn't afford a decent discman with ESP)

My lady's car currently has tape and cd being that it was made in the early 00's the CD player took a crap, and we use tapes (from my re-discovered collection / picked up at thrift stores for $.50) or use one of the tape adapters for the ipod... I don't ever remember a CD player velcro'd to the dash really working well. However the tapedeck -> ipod set up is great. I much prefer it to trying to use one of the radio transmitters.... Anybody remember those? Having to find a new station ever 45 minutes while driving because something started cutting in... ARG! the things we endure to enjoy the music we love...
