Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I like all kinds fish. I like vinegar. I like pickles. I like olives. I like mayonnaise. I like food. I will eat food on a train, I will eat food in the rain, I will eat food here or there, I will eat food anywhere.

Tastiest fish meal I ever had was while one a wilderness canoe trip on the Canadian side of the boundary waters north of Minnesota. Smallmouth bass was so fresh, the head & gills were still trying to breathe while we cooked and ate the rest of him. This is where we discuss bass and doom right? That bass was doomed.

The Eagle Claw show last night went very well for the most part. We played somewhat better than the first time. People dug it. I can't complain at all for it being our second show ever. Small crowd. Tuesday. Eagle Claw was awesome. No cranky attitude whatsoever about weak turnout, just joie de metal. Great guys, it was a real pleasure to hang with them. Locals Wolves of Winter got stuck with the midnight mop-up slot. Only myself, the four members of Eagle Claw, and like three other people were still there for their set. they just got up there and balls out ROCKED IT. I love those guys. They have killer songs, riffs, tone, stage presence, vocals, the whole package really and its like no one cares.

Opener Quantum Colossus was good too, despite the lead singer not showing up. The members did not seem surprised or even mad that he didn't show; apparently he had some ongoing mental health issues. The real bummer I found out on FB this morning- he took his life last night :( I had never seen the band or met any of the members of QC before last night and never met their singer, but man that is tragic and I am very sorry for them. Sorry to end this post on a downer. I love you alls, man. Don't step off the ledge.

Sorry but this fish and Eagle Claw talk led me to this:

I've seen it happen to my friends, more than I let myself admit I know I'm 32, but I can't imagine going just yet...

Corey, I enjoy listening to your soundcloud better than most full albums!

Ha, thanks man. One of these days I'll actually record an album, hopefully that will be as enjoyable.

Don't step off the ledge.

Don't worry about me, I'm not stepping out willingly. I'll put my brain in a robot body when this one gives out, if it's an option. I've got some design ideas.

Grrr...another day, another CL flake. A guy hit me up this morning about buying some cymbals. Arranged a time, that was an hour or so ago. He just texted "not going to buy those after all, sry dude".
At the very least he had the courtesy of letting you know. I've had countless people say "Yeah I'll be down today at (this time) to pick up the item" so I'll actively make plans around the dudes. Then by the time comes, champos never show and never return any texts or calls.

I'm not some gear booty call, y'know. I've got feelings too.

Yeah, he did at least call, but it's sort of the equivalent of waving after you cut someone off in traffic.

Pretty different, the Wizard is kind of a like a boost/OD into a double Muff, with all the depth and baxandall tonestack stuff. Simplification I'm sure, Nick could probably give a detailed explanation. The Cthulhu is sort of a hot rodded Fuzz Face.

The Deluxe model he designed for me is essentially one pedal to replace the 3 pedals on the left for this setup:

To get this tone:

Thanks for the signal chain tip Cory. LS-2 will be sourced soon. I like the Cthulhu tone but soon as I turn up it wants to rip everyone's head off.

I found that I was turning the volume knob on my bass down a little when using it, because it's so high gain it would just squeal feedback. So I ended up putting a pedal in front of it and turning the volume down just a little bit, to reduce the input gain. In that channel I'm running a pretty light OD into the LS-2, with the EQ in front of the Cthulhu rolling off a bit of high end and volume and blending the clean signal. Messing around with that chain is what gave me the idea for the Deluxe Cthulhu idea I pitched to Nick, with a few more bells and whistles. I'm going to mess around with putting the Volt Thrower ahead of it and in the loop and playing around with that when it gets in. I really wish I already had one of the new revised ODB's, I'd try it out with that in parallel or running into it.

Good point on the volume control. I was using a gate to control feed back, that has it's own drawback.
But the LS-2 would be good for any of them that don't have a clean blend option. I want to try it with the blower box mostly... Think it would be a bitchen combo.

The LS-2 is the cheapest blend solution. You can do parallel blending of multiple chains, use it as a clean blend, use it as a switchable loop. I've heard people whining about it not being true bypass and all that, but we're not playing jazz through 100 ft cables. I pretty much always have dirt going, it's never a concern for me.

It would also be fairly easy to build a clean blend loop pedal. I have been thinking about doing this for a couple weeks now. I have the PCB and components for the board, I just need the box and the freed up funds to proceed.

This is what I am using.

I have no affiliation with Jabal81 and am at no benefit posting this. I happen to have a penchant for DIY. An LS-2 would be cheaper, but DIY is more fun.
