Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah. Depending on the cab/speaker, you could dial in just enough sweet break up to get the velvet-y tone from the power tubs.

I'd go with a real, real inefficient speaker to keep the overall volume way down.

See I would want the faital pro 15PR400 for how it sounds. It isnt inefficient, but it sounds so shaging good.

Man I want that pignose, I'd make a headbox then you could sell it either form, with the box or sell box separately, might be a rare market that headbox, but the right guy would pay decent I imagine.

I'm glad the faital dually sounds good with guitar (do you use the tweeter when guitar'ing?)

Is this the whiskey dick you guys refer to? They are from around here in Fort Worth.

No I shut off the tweeter with the guitar most of the time. I am only using a 6 watt amp though.

I say since it has jacks for the speakers and you dig it through your better cabs then turn it into a head. Once you do your customizing magic on it, it can be a keeper or could always be a flipper for you if you tire of it down the line.

Agreed. If it sounds good through My other cabs, I could whip up a headshell, and a simple 15 cab, using scraps from other builds of things, and not have a hell of a lot invested.

This is what I would do. Adjust volume, convert to 1/2", add bracing, tweak porting, and call it a day.
I could see a tube amp and the faital being a really sweet combo for recording.

Yeah, that'd be what I would shoot for. 1/2" baltic birch ply is about the only way I would go on a cab, not to mention I've got a good bit of it around as I use that to build the terror case/shells. I think with the right cab, it could potentially make a cool little rig, for recording and such.

That'd be the ultimate goal. I mean I've got enough big rigs to tear the house down, but something that's smallish and sounds good, is what I don't really have much of.

Agreed 100%

Cool!

Man, You guys got My wheels turning now. I've probably got enough scrap tolex from various builds and such, to come with something really cool, so I'll simmer on it a bit, until I get all the details worked out, and appropriate funds in order. Thanks again!

JMac...if it sounds good running into another cab, I'd give a +1 to removing the amp and just building a head cab for it. You can always keep the existing combo cab and put it back in if you want to resell it later.

Thanks Corey! Yeah, that's probably how I'm gonna move forward with it. If it's a keeper, I can have a cool sounding little amp, otherwise, I can sell it as a head, and probably make a little bit on it, or sell it as a combo and at least recoup what I paid for it.

I say finish your '66 first. Plug it in to that and let it rip. If it passes that test, then build a head case for it.

Oh yeah, the 66 gets finished before I start on anything else. After that, I've got a couple of quick paying jobs to do, then I'll probably get started on putting this little deal together.

If he got a 12/6 loud enough for practice I'm betting the pignose on his '66 would work fine in some circumstances.

Man, I wish the 12/6 was enough for the practice/rehearsal space. Right now, I'm running the 12/6+15/6-tube and Terror bass 1000, so needless to say it's little bit loud. The grand plan at this point, is when I get the 66 finished up, I'll take it to the practice space and bring the other two cabs home.

Over the weekend my uncle played my bass vi, never as a bass, but the dudes been playing since the guitar since the 70's and man it's bittersweet to see someone else rocking your gear and doing stuff you can't... Needless to say holy **** la Bella flats can sound mean and dirty as hell.

Technically unrelated to the WF scheme to honest. WF is like a collection of different types of gain stages and clipping where as the CF is an expansion of the FF circuit but 1 knob only and then the FT was further expansion of the CF. The FT original was created for Jon in Conan and then I figured a deluxe unit would be a good upgrade to that.

The Depth is like a 6 pos rotary, similar to the Depth idea on the WF or any Depth I have ever made in any circuit. In this case its the input cap. Then the Fuzz is now an actual fuzz amount control that could have been put on the CF but I always had it maxed out. The Clip adjusts the clipping diode type in the circuit, Ge, Si, LED, MOSFET, None. Tone and High work in conjunction as the EQ, Boost controls the Boost level of the last gain stage, and Volume is Volume.

Gear cuckolding, that's probably a turn on for some.

It's weird also just seeing him play anything plugged in. I mean I know he must all the time. But when he's visiting he's got his old acoustic just playing Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson etc. songs for my mom.

Funny thing is he rips on the thing through my crate v50 and then he looks down at it and is like what does a middle and bass do? I always see that on my amps too, they move but not sure why...
