Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

That old Denon and Marantz stuff is really nice, I'm holding out until I find a really good deal on one, but I will have something made by them eventually.

Played with the Bass Soul Food, not immediately impressed. It's mostly the way it interacts with my bass, low output means barely any distortion, even at max. I get that that's how a klon is, but it's pretty bad. I didn't think it sounded great on its own with my setup, but it did interact well with the American Sound and the two together can get super dirty, so maybe it'll be a good combo. Also cool is feeding it a distorted signal from something else into, then using the blend knob to mix the two. Feeding it with the bass big muff was pretty gnarly. I have a lot of tweaking to do.

If you wanna thrash I think the boss Metal Zone is the elephant in the room. But doesn't that Transtube have any onboard distortion? Try ramming it with a Tube screamer or similar OD pedal (boss SD-1, etc). Some of my favorite metal guitar sounds I've ever created were with a TS-type OD into a not-quite-gainy-enough tube amp. Or heck, if you have an EQ pedal lying around, spike it somewhere between 500 Hz-1KHz, max the level out, and shove that into the transtube. You could be Reigning in Blood sooner than you think.

I've contemplated that, actually, but I don't have the footswitch with it. I'll likely need to switch from clean/dirty for some songs, and if I have to use the onboard OD without the footswitch, that might be a problem.

In regards to the DOD Death Metal, isn't the Digitech Death Metal based on that? My buddy had one, and we couldn't reign it in. And please, no Slayer comparisons. If it makes me sound like Slayer, I am NOT interested! I recently came to the conclusion after listening to a bunch of Slayer covers that I don't dislike Slayer songs, I just dislike the mix they have and the sound they make. Other people playing Slayer is great!

The DOD & Digitech are essentially the same, might wanna avoid that one then.
