Thinking this is a new band name.
It makes me smile that Crumbsuckers were mentioned on here.
Yeah, good old osteo-arthritis in my right thumb and left index finger. Doc said, "Take Aleve." LOL. It's been getting worse over time, finger and thumb are both starting to deform.
Speaking of delay I was on ebay yesterday and noticed the Akai Headrush II's are being blown out for cheap, not sure if there is a new model coming out or some other reason. The Akai store and a few others had them brand new for $69 shipped and saw another place for $65 with OBO.
Max the Headrush has a tone knob on it so you could brighten it up some and so does that new Mooer Reecho Pro if it would ever hit the stores(well it has a dedicated low and high cut).

fingerstyle is much more painful since I have a tendency to "tuck" my thumb on my right hand towards the palm, and that kicks in the pain. I can use a pick with a lot less pain.
I have some blend of bursitis/carpel tunnel/tendinitis.

Oh god that sucks, truly. I feel for you. I hope that I (and you too) have many years of bass playing left to us, but I figure if the pain in my hands gets too bad, or the wrist pain comes back, I will just go back to messing around on analog synth or take up harmonica or something. Nothing is going to keep me from making music of some kind, some way. But I just hope my hands will hold up.
Yeah, I used to only use a pick about 20-25% of the time. Since I picked bass back up seriously last year, I find I'm using the pick more like 50/50. Got no problem with that. Like the pick attack for some songs and I've never considered pick players a lesser breed. That's boolsheet.
Jeez brother, get it checked out! Often there are things that can be done that will prevent it getting worse or even alleviate it, Not all of these things involve surgery necessarily, but nip that $#!% in the bud, bud.
Based on the description and the Failure song you posted, I'd say the ODB would probably get you in the ballpark better than the Volt Thrower. Just because the VT is a lot more rough sounding and the ODB gets a lot closer to that scooped, tight "bass through a Marshall" sound you referenced. Most of the tones I showcased were mid boosted, because that's what I gravitate towards being that I'm usually mixed with very heavy guitars, but there was one or two close to scooped tones in the picking demo. For that kind of sound you probably use it in the top position on the clipping switch, bottom or middle position on the low shelving switch, gain way up, mid boost all the way off, bass and treble boosted a bit. It would definitely get there better with a Jazz than a Precision too, I'd wager.
Well thats my luck they sold the Afterneath yesterday...BUT its still a NPD!!! I ended up with the Cathedral, they gave me a deal I couldnt refuse. Handles bass great with the damping/tone knob turned up. It gets way weird and wet, and has so many different verbs to get freaky with...plus the echo mode, so I still have delay if I want it. The infinite button is cool. Im sure the Afterneath is awesome but Im sure this Cathedral can do way more!!! The DAB wasnt crazy enough, which was surprising given the companies other overthetop pedals. I also tried a Catalinbred Talisman which was 99% there but the Catherdal got wierder and does more for the same price

I've considered making the switch to keyboard to handle the bass for my little basement jam band.
Hmmm I will be using the pink jazz with the model J's and J retro as the main(probably only) bass from here on out in that project. Strange that I wanted to keep boosting the mids and used the model p loaded bass (which has a mid hump also)when trying to get the tone I wanted in the studio. But like I said in the thread I still couldnt get it. Maybe I was going about it wrong.
I think you could still probably get there with a P and a Rat, reasonably close, but you just have to get the EQ and gain structure right. That song you posted definitely sounded like a very scooped tone, either from dual pickups (or humbucker/s), or amp settings. I would boost mids when going for that sort of tone or at the very least be subtle with it, but usually with those types of bass tones the guitar aren't super gainy, so having some mid scoop on the bass doesn't make it disappear.
