Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yep. Suspension cables.

Fixed.

Hey If you do widen the nur slots will it negatively effect things if you go back to traditional string gauges?

I have done this on a few basses and have yet to have a problem doing it. I have only had one issue before with a nut slot to large and that issue wasn't with the depth. It had been improperly cut and was asymmetrical in cut profile with one side being a more shallow cut if that makes sense. It caused the string to keep popping out. But I haven't had a problem putting a .100-.110 in a slot that fits a .130.

Slight dirt dilemma update. Borrowed some pedals from a from a friend and one of them was the FEA dual band distortion. Sounds like what I'm going for after a big learning curve trying to figure the dang thing out. I might of got a tone from my rat tail that might work also. How I didn't get that in the studio is on me I suppose. Won't know 100% since I was playing thru a different amp and not in the band mix but these pedals are a good start.

that thing is whack, i love the idea though. is that similar to the pedal the bassist from High on Fire uses?

I bring you the history of our people.

I know that I am missing at least one parallel thread if not two or more. If you can find them, please let me know and I will add the links.

i'm so confused as to what my homoerotic reference was for thread 24.. i believe there was some kind of praise and worship/stoner/doom bassists contention at that point

All I want to do is stand in some room filling feedback from PVYHenge right now... Bask in some fuzzy frequencies.

I don't think I shared the story here about seeing PVYHenge the first time. Prior to the GH set, my bandmates and I took a walk around the block and got into the right frame of mind. When the Henge fired up, it basically coccooned me in those rumbly low waves. In a nearly trance-like state, I felt like I was drifting away and had to widen my stance to avoid crossing the event horizon and becoming trapped forever in a black hole.

Remember when I posted in the PW thread"on topic" I must add...and got the ban hammer? Good times...good times.

Hey, I need some advice from you guys.

I recently got more into drone/sludge like Conan and Bongripper from traditional stoner stuff.

However, with my regular .40-.95 strings, they all become floppy rubber strings when I try to tune down to A. Also given the fact that my actions are kinda low, string buzz is crazy.

What kinda gauges do you guys normally use?

Definitely thicker strings, I use .128 for a low B. Type of string can have an impact as well. Hexcore has more tension than roundcore, for instance.

Hmm.... I would have to measure my nut slot for my bottom string first before I even try doing mediocre filling job.

But what if I get Heavy Gauge? 55-110. Of course, it ain't as thick as 5 strings but at least it might fit into my current nut slots. Has anyone tried playing in A with Heavy Gauge instead of 5 strings?

I tuned my 30" bronco bass to B with a .95 E string. I could handle it but I rather have a dedicated B tuned bass so I got a jaguar.
