Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Its been a few days gentlemen. The past week was a marathon of activity. Lots of work, lots of band practice, totally ****ing up this loop pedal build I am doing, half-assedly played a show with some really cool bands, and finally slept. I was awake for like 37 hours straight on like 2 hours of sleep. Crash was an understatement. I survived on redbull and adderall.

The two practices we had leading up to the show were a mixed bag. Totally butchered our set the first night, but the second night it was pretty tight. We have a couple new songs in the works for an album we will be recording this summer so thats pretty cool. Thursday we played a show with a badass local band, Path of Might, and touring bands Black Wizard and Hookers. Path of Might ripped it and I made some connections with their bassist who is also a gear nerd. Black Wizard out of Vancouver was ****ing awesome. Those dudes just killed it. Hookers were great as well, but I am just not into sounds that have an obvious punk rock vibe. I've never been in to punk that much at all.

As far as our performance; the band was pretty happy with it, but I was pretty disappointed. My performance experience is largely based off of wind ensemble and marching band performances. I am used to military precision. My band mates just aren't. Its not that they/we are sloppy, they are very good players. I just feel like I have a much higher level of expectation out of a performance. I think they are more in the mindset that if the crowd doesn't notice, it doesn't matter. Its kind of frustrating, but the drummer is much more available to practice in coming days and hopefully tightness will follow.

I played in symphonic band through school so I know what you mean wanting "military precision".
That's a hard need to break, how to keep the balance of "relax and enjoy" vs accurate perfect etc.
The trick for me is to "stop" trying to keep time and push my metronome on the drummer.
Playing the exact same thing at the exact same meter is IMO easier than playing the exact same thing at a flexible meter.
I say this to mean focus your attention at being one with the drummer as opposed to caring if everyone does it like the recording.
Course all this goes out the window if your drummer is inept.
Weird cause in reality I've got serious trust issues, which completely disappears when I'm "one with the drummer." Somehow I let go and trust them.

If you notice I'm ignoring any and all guitars, that's the real message here.
Good luck man.

Looking at vinyl plants for our upcoming album, and I think we are going Pirate's Press. My drummer has priced them all, and they seem to be the cheapest/best options.

did you get a quote from Standard Vinyl?
Vinyl Record Pressing | Vinyl Pressing | Vinyl Record Manufacturing | Vinyl Records | 12 Inch Vinyl Records | 7 Inch Vinyl Records | Standard Vinyl

keep in mind standard vinyl's prices are in Canadian $ and all inclusive (test press, shipping etc.)
keep in mind, none of these places are vinyl plants. there are only handful of plants, most in eastern europe. These guys just act as intermediaries.

They have their packages listed online. I didn't contact them for an individual quote. I also didn't ask my drummer about shipping or tests. I'll snoop their site.

Went camping in rural Oklahoma (Hugo) with 5 others, two dogs and a baby. Rain rain rain... We all Left early due to the lack of solid ground. Otherwise the first couple days were pretty fun, for a rained out nothing, hiked a smidge, cooked on a rock stove I made, harvested enough black berries one girl made like 20 pancakes with them. Sadly this dog was hanging around us all weekend playing with leela (she was tethered). We go to leave and it bolts into the road and gets killed right in front of my friend and her little kid, leela and myself. Had to bury it before we all left. He was pretty cool, we had named it Oni, Japanese for demon. He was already responding to his name and commands within the two days we had him.

Got home at 1am took a piss and notice in the car ride things have changed, and I now have a tick feeding on the tip of my Dick! Holy hell? So much for never having seen or had one.

Yikes, another dead dog?

I've had a tick in the same place, it sucks.

Pretty quiet around around casa de janitor. Wife has been on call and working all weekend. Holidays are busy times for the medical examiner's office. I've been chilling at home doing some cleaning andcooking, drinking beer, playing new Vegas, gardening. Rained all day yesterday...

I haven't been through Hugo in several years but I always thought it seemed like a cool little town. Isn't it on Route 66? Never camped around there.

Sorry you got rained out. Tons of flooding around my area and we've had several near misses with tornadoes.

Really sad about Oni. What a terrible thing to have happen. In front of a kid too. Damn.

And arachniform fellatio to top it all off.

Hugo is tiny and sad, nothing there at all. Idk if it's on 66 I think we came in on 70, but I wasn't driving, I was holding leela and playing DJ. His family has a 40 acre plot with a 1 room dwelling dubbed the casita. Was fun want to go back when it's dry. We did shoot the .22 a bit, leela is no bothered by thunder or a .22, but drums really bother her.

Tick dick is most definitely a terrible discovery.

The dog Is number 4 in a year... Leela better have taken a lesson from what she saw and never run out in the street like that.

Well, after hours of playing/practicing today, there just might be hope of me becoming a decent guitarist! Nothing fancy or whatnot, but good enough to play some old school Swedish death metal ala Dismember. Which is pretty much what I wanted to do. Yay!

Taught myself how to palm mute today, too. Pretty cool. Now I get why I could never do it on bass. I don't use picks!

Yeah no way it's on 66 which doesn't get near that far south in Oklahoma. I was thinking of this other nothing little town called Hydro west of my location. Mostly I remember thinking some of the old brick buildings in Hugo looked cool. May be lame memory though.

Seriously. I've seen a lot of good dogs go that way. Hell my little punk-ass chihuahua got creamed by a big truck a few months back doing that. Somehow he was okay aside from some skin getting torn off a hind leg.

That's cool. My guitar skills continue to atrophy.

I used to hardly ever use a pick on bass but I'm doing it more and more these days. Maybe 50/50.

You can still approximate palm muting with fingers on bass...but you have to use your fretting hand to do it.
