Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Anyone know of a place (online or wherever) to get decent guitar pickups? I say decent, because I'm gonna put them through OD anyway, and I don't want to drop tons of money on tones I wouldn't be able to tell were "better". I'm hoping to stay in the $50 range each. Think that $25 Craigslist special might have bad pickups, and I'm taking it somewhere today after exhausting all I'm capable of checking last night. Wanna be ready if they tell me they have to replace pups. It's a Les Paul style, if it matters. 6 string. Thanks in advance!

Cool!
Wow Lawton took me way back to 1991, basic training and artillery school at Ft. Sill.

It's a real sh!thole, although the nearby mountains and wildlife refuge are kinda nice. Only gone downhill since '91, and I used to hit Lawton occasionally back then because they had so many killer pawn shops.

I'm about 40 minutes northeast of there. Just sayin'. If anyone is interested in the Longhorn we maybe could work something out.

I hear good things about GFS/Guitar fetish pickups but I don't have any experience with them.

They do have a lot of options, SC, HB and other things like Filtertron knockoffs.

I know they are inexpensive and some people swear by them.

That's the only thing that comes to the top of my head.

Wasn't someone talking about a Dano Longhorn bass? Bryce? Anyone? Beuhler?

Ooh if this bass vi falls through or doesn't go for a price id pay, I might be road tripping. Walters is 2 hours from me.

Ill do a straight trade for the Mostly Harmless preamp...no trades backies...

Hmmm can't see why I'd regret that trade. I'll box it up before I get all second thoughty

GFS makes some good pickups. I've enjoyed all three I've received from them.

Yeah on the cheap go with GFS. I had some Dream 180's in a jazz box and a MM style pup in a Fernandes bass I had, both were plenty good. I had some Mighty Mite tele pickups in partscaster that were decent too.

Something else I just thought of. Would I need to get new pots or anything?

Here are the pickups I would get from them (either bridge, neck, or both, depending on what I need or feel at the time):
Crunchy PAT High Output Humbucker, Black

And here's the guitar:
Crunchy PAT High Output Humbucker, Black

Thanks again!

500k alpha/audio pots, I doubt you need them though. I can't believe everything in this guitar failed.

Did you do the pickup tap test?

Those pickups and the less hot fat pats are supposed to be really good. Dream 90's too. I have the loud mouth, the fender wide range and a lil killer strat pickup.

+1 for GFS. I've used them, friends and bandmates have used them to good effect as well. Their PAF (the "PAT", I think) style pickups are solid if you just need a decent generic humbucker for guitar.

I did not. What is this "pickup tap test" you speak of? Just dropped it off at the local shop. Tech said he'd call me in a few hours. Let's hope for the best!

Should be getting my paws on the SWR 610 tomorrow, bringing it to band practice tomorrow night. Probably won't get to crank it because I think this going to be more of a writing session (drummer's arm is still in a sling), but we'll see how it sounds. It hasn't been used for 10 years so hopefully it doesn't have any issues.
Good luck! And what's the drummer's excuse? Has he never heard of Def Leppard?
