Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Project "Post-VEGA" is mos def taking flight. We got a buddy who's a riff and solo monger on guitar and the GH drummer may be taking vox/frontman status. We're still going to be trying out a few people for a second guitarist but we'd be totes fine without one.

A couple unfinished VEGA jams will be making the transfer and the first one we're adapting has never sounded as good as it did tonight, and it was basically our first run through of it.

New guitarist is also a KVLT member...means we retain an all PVY backline. We had his VTM 60 dimed tonight and oh my, glory be, soooooo BRVTAL. Even if it almost wasnt enough, a VTM 120 or my MACE will be perfect.

I daisy chained my Bass 300 with the folded 18 into the PA200 and 218. Signal went Ric > TU2 > BF2 > WUMBO > EQD Ghost Echo.

Holy ****. We just got reamed at work. One of our distributors for Luckys markets ran their supply totally out. We are currently in like 14 stores across the country. So on top of our other large frozen orders and the legitimate days work just keeping up with my production for local restaurants and the Cardinals, we just received an order for almost 5000 cases of bread that has to be completed by the 24th. That means pan bread everyday. Anytime I run pan bread it's a guaranteed 12-13 hour day for the pan bread guy. Not to mention that because of the labor involved that basically removes a set of hands from my team when it comes time to pack. On top of that I have poor boy subs that sell enough to warrant a mix everyday that just started necessitating production for large scale frozen orders. And we have to make slightly smaller versions that have to be sliced for the Cardinals. Also they are adding another sourdough product to my production without any additional labor. Oh yeah and the outrageous quantity of pretzel that takes two people and a bunch of time. We are short pretzel every week because we can't produce enough. That means I have to borrow product from another team which in turn means that one day a week my pretzel production is repayment production. fML just doesn't quite cover it. Hello 6days a week 12-13 hours a day for the next month... If I'm lucky. Woof.

That seems like $$$$. But I am salaried. I'll get the 6th day of pay sure, but with my bills and such it still leaves me with like 50-60 bucks every two weeks for saving or fun money. I'm still ~450 short of a dually with no interest shown in my G&L. It may be a while...

On a positive note, Kenny from Fister is considering downsizing his massive rig (two 1820s, an emperor 412 and 215) and told me I would be the first person he calls when he sells his beta bass. And I know he would give me a straight deal on it so that's cool. Maybe down the road I'll run the beta(if it happens) into a power amp then into two duallies. Loud.

I gots tuh. Maybe I'm a little soft hearted, but I am young at 27, love hard work and don't mind long hours. Lack of OT for me really sucks but salary is not without its perks. I really feel for my employees though. I'm the youngest by 3 years. The other guys are 30, 34, 43, 46 and I think 55 or 56. They work so hard for me, telling them I appreciate it every day doesn't seem like enough. They love working for me though because many of the other supervisors do as little as possible and I am a player-coach through and through. If they all have to do 6 days, I'm down 6 days, no question about it. The other supervisors will ask employees for help so they can leave early and many of them do whatever it takes to only work 8 hours because they are not getting paid after that. They will forego many cleaning responsibilities and let hourly employees get away with murder regarding simple cleaning and things like taking trash out. I don't allow my guys to do that out of respect for the sanitation standards, constant effort to improve and on a base level; it gives me some clout when *****ing about everyone else slacking. I keep my Ts crossed and my I's dotted.

Hamms and Blatz are what I call gambler's beer. Sometimes you get a case and it's damn good, fresh, tastes great, no gastrointestinal issues. So you go buy another one, that case tastes like weeks-old dirty socks that had bongwater spilled on them. Diarrhea and/or vomiting ensues, followed by the obligatory "I'm never drinking Hamms/Blatz again."

What is this "Blatz" you speak of? Never heard of it! I fancy myself quite the connoisseur of cheap swill beer... You know, as far as those two things make sense.

Any of you dudes happen to have a neck for an epi SG? Just took a look at mine, fretboard is separating from the neck and a once well disguised crack is now visible. Apparently this thing had a full break (like headstock completely off) behind frets 1-3. No wonder dude was so quick to give it away.

Imagine if Hamms made a cheaper version, with a more aggresive sweet malty flavor and you're in the ballpark. Used to get cases of returnables for $4.99. Costs a bit more now.

That sounds amazing. It's not in Missouri, that's for sure. Maybe I'll see some in Minneapolis when I go soon. Might be more popular up north there. If it's good enough for Liberace, it's good enough for me!

On the Black Paisley front - just had a good half hour with it. Very similar to the Fab Tone, but slightly brighter and tighter. It's much more versatile, however, with the mids switch. In "off" (flat mids) it sounds almost identical to the Fab Tone but with the aforementioned differences. The other two positions make this stand out quite a bit, however. It can do scooped metal pretty easily with the scoop engaged, and sounds massive, chunky, and handles the B string pretty well as well as huge palm mutes. Nice modern metal sounds. With mids boosted, it can do black metal pretty well if you back off the treble. The octave function is fun to play with, but it's not for me. I'm sure some will like it, but it sounded really synthy to me and not my thing. All in all, a great pedal for the cash and a worthy companion to the Fab Tone. However, as similar as they are, if you're going for the old-school Swedish death metal tone ala Dismember or Entombed, the Fab Tone is better. That sound has the looser quality of the Fab Tone, which makes sense since it's basically a cloned Boss HM-2 which was Swedish Death Metal's bread and butter. I'll likely keep the Black Paisley on the board over the Fab Tone, though. Fab Tone and Daddy-O will be on 2nd board duty.

Haven't tried the Black Paisley on bass. Not typically a big fan of that crazy OD sound on bass, but I'll give it a shot soon. Wife just got home, so I had to quiet down, and we all know that LOUDER is always better...

Dan Echo coming in Monday! We'll see how it stacks up to my Way Huge Echo-Puss. Maybe try both on bass, and if I like it, keep one on bass, otherwise, I'll keep it on the 2nd guitar board for an all Dano secondary. Good times!

My grandpa owned a beer distributorship and my dad worked there when I was little, I remember Hamm's and Miller Lite were the main things. We used to have tons of old 50's and 60's Hamm's memorabilia around. When my dad started AA I remember him selling off a ton of stuff for years and giving it away to people. He'd probably be rolling in dough if he had kept it and sold it on eBay these days.


I put my PT-2 up for sale. It's got a Voodoo power supply and hard case, all the cables (plus some extra ones) and pretty much still new. If any of you guys are interested, shoot me a pm for doombro deals.

Completely understand that. Beefheart/Don Van Vliet has long been one of my favorite artists. His music ran the gamut from harrowing blues and deep psych to the utterly unique stuff of Trout Mask Replica. Then after about 17 years in music, covering all that territory, he gave it up to pursue visual arts full time, and I love his paintings.

I know early on he is said to have been something of a maniacal tyrant to work for, but it's hard to argue with the results.

It may not be my favorite album of all time, but I think I'll always consider Trout Mask Replica one of the most interesting and groundbreaking albums ever released in the world of pop/rock music. I sometimes go months without listening to much other tham Beefheart, though it's been a good while since I went on that kind of a bender.

I definitely have more Beefheart in my collection than anyone else, including lots of rare stuff, bootlegs, etc.
