Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Sorry about the cat.
I thought I was going to have to actually put down our goat Friday. Some bacterial deal making it hold its head funny and walk in backwards circles. Got the injectable antibiotics from Tractor Supply and he is on the mend quick but when I first saw him I was mentally preparing myself to pull out the pistol and stop his suffering.

Hey duders, hope all's well. Did some travelling/chilling out with the Mrs. in the Madison, WI area this past weekend which was nice. We had to put down a gato last week and that was heartbreaking. :(

Looking forward to two MDT gigs this weekend. Friday is an outdoor gig that usually draws huge crowds. We're playing an early set, 6:30ish, so we'll have plenty of time to booze afterward, too! Sat is a house party with bands, hopefully it's chaotic!

Also starting some jamming with my new project in coming days. More details on that as it comes together.

Lastly, I'm combing through my hoard to find more stuff to sell.

Sucks about putting the cat down. All our pets are over 10 years old now, I've been thinking more lately about how my wife is going to react when we start getting there.

Well last week I had a really good interview for a job similar to what I have been doing at a new company. Formal offer from them came through this morning. Not quite a double in salary, but close, better insurance coverage, 4 weeks PTO, better 401k options.

Sorry for all the pissing and moaning the past couple of months, thanks for tolerating me!

But will you be able to use that money for a gear slush fund?

Maybe slowly. I am going to get my car paid off ASAP, and get ahead on some other fronts as well. Ultimately I really would like to buy a house, and stop dumping cash in to rent that could be equity. Not living in a house that is cut up in to apartments will let me make noise on my own time as well.

Started work on a Rat clone, had the empty pcb, lm308 and most of the parts so I'll only need to order a couple of things to get it done. Will probably add multiple clipping options and a Reutz switch. Then the goal is to sell it for a profit, we'll see how that goes.

Since you're a fellow doomer, I'll share my secret Doomy RAT mods: (well, they're nothing THAT special, but every customer has been very happy)

LM308 (of course!)
C1 - .047uF
C4 - Silver-Mica 100pf. or at least an NP0 ceramic.
C7 - 5.6uF FILM (not crappy polarized EL cap) This will be a huge cap, but it's worth it imho. Panasonic makes some nice small polypropylene units.
D1 +D2 - Lift the diode who's cathode is going to ground, and place a 1N34A germanium diode between it's cathode and ground. Provides a bit more headroom/volume, and more complex clipping.
C9 - .047uF
C10 - Film (ideally polypropylene) 1uF (knee is already ~1Hz here, so no need to fatten it up)
Reutz Mod + Switch if preferred.

With these mods I've only gotten lots of "Holy F*ck! This thing is awesome!" from customers. Zach from Bereft uses my modded RAT (as well as my old HEAVILY modded LANEY AOR Pro Tube).

Stock RAT schem for reference:

The Blue voodoo cab is up and running.

The blue voodoo head turns on, tubes light up, no fuses blow. The sound is very low volume and super nasty distorted. Any ideas?

The pig nose turns on and tubes light up and no sound comes through, but a steady low volume hum that is not louder when more gain is added. Any ideas?

No smells or visible damage in the chassis inside or out.

Did you clean the pots and jacks on the Crate with DeOxit? May not be the issue, but it could be. It's a cheap thing to try anyway.
