Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

He could work with you on a new pickup and probably custom wind you one for either position.
Met him a long time ago while copying some of his designs at the copymat I was managing in the east bay.
Was pretty guarded of his copy. ;)

Oh yeah, I've looked at his BiSonics before. I'm not looking for just hte humbucker though, I want to eventually find an OG EB-3, preferably in player condition that I wouldn't feel bad changing into a 3-way toggle.

Also, just discovered there's a Fender 400PS in Seattle for under $1000...

Mermen are pretty cool. Psych surf. If Jimi fronted a surf band kinda thing...

New or old surf? I'm pretty well versed in this stuff.

new or old doesn't matter. whatever you got just throw it at me :)

Swedish band called The Hollywoods was pretty heavy instro...not all surf.

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet and Man...Or Astro-Man? did some fairly heavy instro stuff in the vein of surf. Active in the 90s.

You might try to find stuff by The Outsideinside or the Shut the Fvck Up ep by The Mono Men...

cool, i'll check these out to start.

In other news, i hooked up the SVT and 810 in the garage and played it for about an hour. i don't think i can bring myself to sell them...

Well, ti be honest, when it comes to the "original wave" of surf, I don't know if it comes much harder than the mighty Dick Dale. I mean, to me Miserlou is pretty effin heavy for its time. Most people don't know it, but Leo Fender worked very closely with Dale on his amps. He'd build one, give it to Dick to try out, he'd blow it into melted hunks at a gig, and Leo went back and back and back to the drawing board until he put together something that could withstand Dale's onslaught, and this resulted directly in the creation of a few of Fender's most famous amps, including the Dual Showman and the Bassman.

With surf, it's a genre where there were a million bands, but most only had one or two standout tunes, like Bullwinkle Pt 2 by The Centurions, or Pipeline.

Also, surf was meant primarily as dance music, and a lot of it is slow and dreamy...I don't equate most surf from any era as heavy.

The band Lawndale were pretty cool and sometimes heavy. Released 2 albums in the 80s on SST. From the 60s I always dug The Atlantics from Australia. Not a lot of heavy though.

I'm a lot less help than I thought I might be. Sorry.

The mermen are awesome, but I wouldn't call it heavy.

Gotta agree...they do have passages where they build up to pretty heavy crescendos, but overall, yep.

@CL400Peavey --so sorry to hear. I've lost a few friends the same way over the years. What a terrible, stupid drug.

As for Jacks tone? It's unique for sure. Not many are willing to sacrifice speakers as he did. :)
That guy makes some great pickups my old bass teacher got a p90 pair for his 64 casino and I got a new pickup for my P bass from him they all sounded awesome.

Yeah, I checked. $20. Not terrible, but not cheap either. I'm gonna give it a few weeks I think, and see how she does. We don't have a drummer right now, so we'll keep volume low and hope she gets there. We'll just adjust volume to the tube amp, since it's got to be at a certain setting to get the sound.
OK, I'm not saying this to be harsh or belligerent, but: she's a BABY, who has no option than to live where she is. You gotta keep that volume DOWN, tube tone or not. If she's reacting badly, as her "father" for lack of a better term, you have to put her needs before your own.
