Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

does this Kava stuff help you sleep?

I have bouts of insomnia, sometimes 3-4 nights with little to no sleep in a row, but in between those (usually a few weeks) i sleep fairly well. I've used a couple different sleeping pills and while they work the sleep is not the same as real sleep, and i find them pretty addictive.

Yes I refer to it as liquid REM. I always make sure I have a nightcap of kava before bed. I used to toss and turn and never wake up refreshed. With my nightcap I actually start ro nod off on the couch which I never do. I sleep less hours a night too because I sleep so soundly. It is a diuretic so I do occasionally wake up go to the bathroom but I fall right back asleep. I am really impressed with the medicinal benefits of kava for anxiety and regulating sleep.
An inexpensive and simple way to try out kava is to order some Kava King instant from iherb. You just shake it up in water or juice.

Does it dissolve or is it just a gritty homogenized suspension?

You have to really shake it well or throw it in the blender. Sometimes I find some unblended floaters at the bottom and throw more juice at it and reshake. Micronized kava is kind of chalky but it is very convenient. At home I prefer to do use tradtional medium grind root as I am only pulling the kavalactone oils out of the root. Micronized is a process of grinding the root into such a fine powder you can drink it instantly. Good for work or travel and maybe a little stronger than traditional grind.

Have you tried Melatonin? OTC by the vitamins in any drugstore. Highly recommend.

Haven't tried kava, but plan to.

Melatonin is good for other things too. Great antioxidant for one, apparently.

Lately been taking Gabapentin/ Neurontin at night, ostensibly for neuropathic pain. Doesn't do so much for pain IME, but is a great Rx sleep aid.

Picked up a Dano Cool Cat today. 9v version. Fun little chorus. Probably suit all my "needs". Also, it's the last of their big line (except the oddball effects) that I needed to complete my Dano board. Good stuff! Also picked up that DOD DFX9. Great delay! Everything I wanted, and it has a cool infinite loop setting that I don't have to hold the switch for. Great to mess with stuff. That's all for today. If I can find a cheap used tuner pedal and chorus (Dano might work, but I'd have to take it off the Dano board) for the guitar board I'd pretty much be set for pedal GAS.

I've never heard of Kava until people started mentioning it in this thread. I've also never run across it in any of the sleep journals I have to read for work or CEUs (I am a sleep technologist by trade). It does, however, look like the real deal from what I'm reading about it, however, I've never heard any sleep docs discussing it, not even at conferences. Usually the traditional medicine for a sleeping aid is Valerian root tea which works really well (but smells like a foot). Melatonin works too but the dosages are usually really high you only need a couple mgs and they sell like 15-20mg pills which is more then necessary.

Most people with "insomnia" have poopy sleep hygiene or a vitamin imbalance, might want to get your bloodwork done (specifically vitamin B) and take your TV out of your bedroom.

I used to medicate myself to sleep with a cocktail of valerian root and melatonin. Valerian root is indeed distinct and profoundly unpleasant to the olfactory. Now I medicate with anxiety meds when I absolutely have to get to sleep but can't, usually in broad daylight. But that's rare. I actually have terrible sleep patterns by modern standards. I usually get off work between 8 and 10 am and nap for like 1-2.5 hours. Then I take another nap from 7:30-9 and go to work between 9:30 and 10:30. From what I have read it's actually fairly reminiscent of human sleep patterns pre-industrial revolution. People think I'm crazy and I probably am to an extent, but I function fine. Adderall helps, but I have a wicked streak of ADD so it's a nessecity not just a stimulant.

It's probably unhealthy, but I don't exercise(outside of my physically intense long shifted job), I smoke a pack a day, drink an energy drink or coffee daily and indulge in other things to a degree that most people would find way in excess. But I function and have the heart and lungs of a sprinter, as I've been told by doctors.

Melatonin never worked for me. I was a terrible sleeper before kava and I have a sleep apnea machine. I think my sleep problems were mostly anxiety, being a worry wart keeping myself up all night and not being able to shut off my brain. So I think it is a double whammy why kava works so great for me, it's natural anxiolytic properties(tested to work better than Xanax), and it's sedative properties. One strain of kava I had I can't even drink during the day or afternoon because two cups and I am sleeping within an hour. Though everyone reacts a little differently to the different strains of kava due to the chemotype of the strain of the root and how you react to the chemotype make up of it. All strains have made me rest well. Some strains can make you antsy if you drink too much of them, but even then it made me maybe stay up and hour later than usual and I still woke up refreshed. I also never sleep so sound before where on the weekends I couldn't roll back over and nod back off again. A full night sleep on kava and you are up, wide awake, refreshed, and there is no drifting back off. I sort of joke that kava reminds of an Army Drill Sergeant in the morning. It screams at you, I know you slept well from me effer, now grab your sack and get out of the rack.

On a side note, I successfully chased off an incoming migraine drinking yerba mate tea yesterday. I felt my eyestabber creeping in and knew it was on the way. I ran to the kitchen and slammed some iced mate and then made a nice hot cup of mate, and I was feeling better in about a half hour.

I had stopped believing in herbal medicines. I tried so many over the years for migraines and sleeping, and they were all bunk for me. I think the problem is, you need the actual plant or root, not some pill form concoction that some company mixes up.

I used to have a terrible insomnia a few years ago, so I resorted to drinking. Not excessively, but enough to go to sleep every night (usually 3-4 beers or a bottle of wine). Weed also helped. After a few months of this I started to fear of becoming a complete ruin so I gradually stopped and, amazingly, sleeplessness went away. I have some sleep issues now and then, but nothing of significance. Too much work also helped. I was usually too wasted to drink or do anything at all and just went to sleep.

I saw that kava is illegal in Poland! That is crazy. Germany just made it legal again a few weeks back and they actually temporarily bought all the stock off a few kava vendors. A guy who was in Tonga said oh my goodness they are loading airplanes with tons of kava, you folks better order and stock up before it gets dry. Sure enough a week later there was out of stock product listings on Kavaboy and Kava King LOL.

Yeah, it was kinda hit with a shrapnel when they delegalized all the spices and other synthetic drugs in like 2010 or something. They made a lot of stuff illegal then, including kratom and some natural stuff because, you know, durrr hurrr, drugs.

Next time I am back in PA I will have some kava with my kielbasa and latkes in honor of your struggle and to protest the Polish kava injustice.

if somebody doesn't buy the druid fuzz in the next two hours on ebay, it's going on tb, i am so tired that i can't even post new pics of the kitten until later, cause i'm not feeling messing around with the iphone now, think the cat allergies are getting me or maybe it's a little silver energy vampire

I haven't written any music in a while. So I made an effort to hammer something out this morning. Just one or two riffs on guitar, but it's something. I left some room to play some nice basslines later. Still can't find any people to play with everyone keeps flaking out, but if I wait around for a real drummer I'll never play, so I'm just sticking with Superior Drummer for now. Just need to up my game on that, as most of the stuff I'm wanting to write has more swing and that's a lot harder to program manually for me.
