Interestingly I was doing some side by sides on the heads today, and noticed the 2000s with the tube recs actually stays cleaner farther up the dial than the other two. At 7, it's about the perfect crunch, whereas the other two (both SS rectified) at the same exact settings are noticably more distorted/driven. The other two are louder, which is to be expected, but like I said, also more distorted. Idk if it has to do with the rectifiers entirely though, as when 2000s #1 was serviced by Conrad some years back, he said it had a different gain stage setup in the front end in order to stay cleaner longer, though I've never had this verified by any other tech (haven't needed to have it worked on since).
I guess maybe the solid state rectifiers wouldn't have had the alternate gain stage setup to stay cleaner longer, since it wouldn't have been as much of an issue with them? Have you experimented with preamp tubes at all or just left them as is?
So when my guitarist's dad passed away, he discovered that he'd inherited a workshop with a respectable table saw and drill press. He and I are planning on building some cabs. The first (practice) ones will be using the six Sunn guitar speakers I had leftover from modding my cab. Not sure how many watts those handle. Basically planning on making a 4x12 and a 2x12 that will be 2/3 and 1/3 of a 1200S cab, respectively.
Unrelated, but when tubes are on their way out, how can you tell if none are actually microphonic or anything?
