Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Weekend was great. The MDT gig on Friday was awesome: good crowd, bands, pay, sound & booker. Saturday started a little too soon for my liking after the Friday gig but the road trip (with my Heavycraft bandmates) out to Chicago was easy. Saw Ghost at the Riviera. Show was really well done, very theatrical. They are super tight. Opener was decent. Only complaint would be beer prices (go figure). Picked up an Al's Beef then hauled azz back home. Then did a long HC jam and some promo photos/vids on Sunday afternoon, that's coming along good and we'll be ready for a 60-70 minute set on 11/7. Totally crashed last night. Good to be busy.

In moment-of-weakness news, I'd had my eye on a natty finish late-70s Aria Mach 1 P bass and made an offer that was accepted. We'll see how that purchase turns out: could be a try-and-flip or could be a winner.

On GB, my robo-drummer has a "swing" dial, so I'm good. :p

Edit: I wish drummers came with a "swing" dial, too.

I've been thinking about getting some new midi packs to mess with. I have some swinging and 6/8 style ones now, but they're all way more busy sounding than I like for heavy rock. I can edit them, it just takes time and right now I just want to get ideas out as fast as possible. So I just programmed up a little swinging beat with just kick, snare and hi-hat with no fills or variations, just so I could get an idea down quick.

Something happened a couple of months back and i haven't dealt with it well.
Truth be told i made a mess of things with my wife and job.
Been trying to make amends where i can. Not really sure how.

I have gas for a product that doesn't exist in the mass market world. While I understand why, I also don't get it as I think there would be a legitimate niche market.

I want a rack mount 300w tube power amp. Like the power section of an SVT to be used with any line level preamp. This should exist.

No poopie. Google hadn't shown me such a thing, I must delve further. I saw that Demeter makes something close, but it was $2600 or something silly.


Looks like Ampeg made the SVP 1600 power amp. Essentially the power section of the 4 pro.



Electric makes some 200w power units but I have heard they have questionable business practices.

I just wanted to weigh in because I am a sleep tech but a lot of sleep labs are un-accredited and some of the techs in the industry really are terrible at their jobs. There's been a big push to get everyone registered and certified nationally but you might want to make sure the place you went to have your study and your sleep doctor was ABSM certified and the doctor an ABSM diplomate or some of your issues might be the machine not being calibrated properly. There used to be a lot of doctors that weren't board certified in sleep that ran their own un-accredited sleep labs and would put everyone on auto PAPs instead of actually setting the devices because the reimbursement for sleep studies used to be extremely high.

That being said my only other comment is because kava is a sedative it most likely affects your muscle patency and taking it would make your obstructive sleep apnea more acute which means your CPAP might require a higher pressure when taking it. I'd also assume, like other sedatives, that it most likely significantly affects your sleep staging which can be either a good or a bad thing, most sedatives are REM-supressants. It's entirely possible you are experiencing more lucid/vivid dreaming on it because your OSA is worse in REM while taking kava and you are actually having apneas/microarousals which is why you are semi-concious and remembering your dreams. There doesn't really seem to be much research on it and sleep from what I can tell. I'll ask the doctors here what they think of it next time I run into them but you should always at least ask a physician before taking something like that especially for drug interactions.

A tester would tell you the life left, but it's not necessary. If you were to go pay $10 bucks to get them tested, just spend the $20 and get new preamp tubes.

Edit: you might always want to keep a set of extra tubes around, since you only have the one amp.

You can also use an SM57 in conjunction with a DI or kick drum mic for the lows.

That modded 1200s cab sounds cool. I'm thinking about building another cab as well, either another 2x15 or 6x12. The only thing is idk if I want to drop cash on a bunch of 12s, you know? (JBL 120s aren't cheap, and neither are any of the Weber's intended to replace them).

A 6x12 like 1200S?

If you're thinking of using it for bass, I wouldn't bother, at least not with the original speakers. I'm sure they sound outstanding for guitar, but for bass, even one tuned EADG, they were fart city.

I have Sovteks in the power section my D-180 and I've been very happy with them.
