Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

$79.99, got it for $70 cash out the door. Harmony H160E w/pickup and guts of an electric guitar built into the neck and upper bout? No info online at all, but had to get this weird thing. Also it's dark and sexy as hell.

Is it easy to take the strings off my ibanez acoustic and use them on the harmony instead? I only leave an inch of excess string tops....

Fave Ween albums are God-Ween-Satan, The Pod and The Mollusk, but I do love 12 GCGs...

@askrere --that Harmony is cool as hell! Wild design...never seen that before, but great idea...

The Harmony is badass, acoustically sounds better than my ibanez, looks awesome, smells like cigar boxes and when plugged in you can crank the gain and rock it like an electric guitar. It will need a noise gate to stop cycle 60 and feedback from loud volumes, but so would any hollow body with a single cool into a cranked orange. Lower the volume though and it still takes all the dirt no squeals, so for erryday home use its golden.

I don't understand how there's no mention of it or this pickup style anywhere...

Actually there's a guy who posted to TB asking about a pickup like this and he got the regular TB welcome and pissed on for asking.

I found out about Ween via the SNL movie "It's Pat". They played captain fantasy live in it and my older cousin freaked out and grabbed his dad to show him the Ween scene and I've been hooked ever since.

That Harmony is really cool. Dug that Ween country album, goes well with kava!
Get you one f these sound hole plugs for the Harmony to help control the feedback.

I often get into spurts of different types of music. Right now I'm listening to a lot of Funk and Motown. I'm not new to either. Been a Motown fan for a long time. But I'm learning a lot. Learning about James Brown and Bootsy and the concept of the "One." and just getting deep into Jamerson lines, etc.

So, I'm a bit curious, as Doom/Stoner is where I find myself drawn to in band situations... For those that play Stoner/Doom, and have studied funk (or other genres), how has that affected your playing in Stoner/Doom? If you have some specific examples, I'd love to hear about them.

Probably best to be eclectic this day and age. There is way too much monotony going on and bands that have some interesting textures usually stand out from the rest.
We finished off the last 20 min of band practice this weekend playing three of our songs at a crawling tempo. It was fun not ripping through them at the usual break neck hardcore pace.
At some point what your listening to will always come out in the music you write. Just not always slap your momma obvious.
Even though we are playing hardcore the only person that isn't interested in us going to a doom format is the singer.
We have a couple of songs that would work great with some slower grind and soon well be polishing them up.
Far as most are concerned if there are no vocals he can take a break or bust out some death grunts. ;)

so get this, last friday our guitarists other band opened for Bongzilla. He was letting them borrow an amp because the east coast dates were "fly in" shows. Anyway, during sound check the guitarist of Bongzilla took his Sunn Model T, cranked it nearly all the way up and blew it up. Then just looks at it and goes "oh... hmmm" and then just walks off, goes out to the van and chills.. Never said so much as "sorry" let alone an offer to fix it. DOUCHES!

Well I didn't see turkey but I did manage to fully black out during tools set so mission accomplished I guess.

Haha That festival was a charlie foxtrot through and through. I was struggling to find ANYONE. I even got separated from my girl for a while and had to search for her.

I did end up meeting @Burnsy though, which was great. It was a great show I thought. C&C were a little more sloppy than times I had seen them in the past but it was still good. Primus was a little quiet in my opinion, but they brought the heat as always. Tool... what more can I say... Dressed as Led Zeppelin and opening with No Quarter, extended version of Opiate and all the best tunes. My chips are on black saying that was the last Tool performance for a long time, maybe ever. Stoked I got to see it. Bummed that by the time I worked my my way through the entrance line, the ID line and the beer line; the merch booth had experienced utter devastation. I was hoping for a poster (signed would have been dope) but those apparently were gone within 45 minutes of open.

The show was excellent, but my experiences in AZ probably topped my show experience. To all the AZ folk here and @Muddslide, y'all are right. AZ ****ing rules. Fast highways, block layout across the city, endless hole in the wall mexican food places that are amazing. Sedona was on another level. Cathedral rock was one of the most cathartic climbs I have ever made. I want to live in villa on top of a mesa in Sedona and that's that.

@Jolagh The Mostly Harmless wouldn't fit in my carry on so you lucked out. THIS TIME. :)

I've known those guys for over 10 years and this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I'd bet money that it was PeeWee (muleboy/Mike) and not Spanky. But really, neither would surprise me.

The story that really drove this point home was hearing about how during their heyday they had a Euro tour booked, drummer hadn't been working much and had no money. Showed up in Europe for the tour then tells everyone that he's broke and can't pay for anything. Not a huge deal, but still a poopy thing to spring on the rest of the group. His solution? Empty out his then-girlfriend's checking and savings accounts and blow the money on booze, party favors and who knows what else. Cue sad phone call from drummer's mom begging the then-GF to not press charges. Band left him somewhere in eastern europe and hired a fill-in to finish the tour, as dude had all kinds of international bank fraud issues to deal with.

Nice buncha guys.

NCD!

Not a bass cab, but I had Dave at Gigmaster whip me up a little 212 using light weight aruco and a pair of Eminence Lil' Texas speakers. I will be running it for a while with my VHT special 6, but I have been thinking of picking up one of the Peavey mini heads which will also double as a decent practice/recording interface. My issue is now I am kind of torn between the three options. 6505, Valveking, Classic 20. I think the Classic 20 would get me closest to the tone I would want most of the time, but the valveking is more versatile, and the 6505 just sounds amazing.

I've been trying to decide on a small tube head for home recording for a while myself. What are you going to be doing with it? That will probably have a big impact on what you choose. I'd go with the 6505 with an OD/boost or something if want high gain metal tones, Valveking if you're staying more middle of the road rock tones and Classic if you're going bluesy or using a lot of pedals. Not sure how the cleans on the Valveking are for using with lots of pedals, but the 6505/5150 full head was always kind of finicky for me with fuzz or heavier dirt pedals and I never liked the clean channel much.
