Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Oh boy... I don't think I have enough woodworking skill to make a larger hole in my P-bass... I guess I'll give Fralin underwound a listen, cuz I think individual difference in play-style and definition are important in the genre that I'm trying to play.

In any genre.
The difference between any 2 bassists technique can be night and day.

It's such a personal and subjective thing, coupled with string choice the choices are myriad.

Do you know anyone nearby with aftermarket pickups?

Play every bass you can.

Just takes a router, some safety glasses, clamps, and a little dose of foolishness.

To be fair, it's my first bass and I'm never going to sell it, so I don't care about resale value.

On the pickup matter, my Precision is an AVRI '62 and came stock with the old Fender '62s/Originals, and I love them. There's a lot of threads where they are discussed. They're pretty burly pickups, some don't like them because they find them a bit too aggressive for the "vintage" Precision sound, but I think they nail that Entwistle roar when played through the right amps.



And in other news, EB-3 ARRIVED AND I AM VERY EXCITED. Better condition than I thought, but I quickly learned that flatwounds are not for me (came from the seller with flats, they just don't feel right), so the search for some good rounds for SS goes on.

Consider stainless steels, I went that way for rounds as it gives the edgy brightness that can get lost on the lower tension innate to the scale and string size options.

Just finished Sushi Girl on Netflix.

Glad I got to the end. Felt like another Usual Suspects, Reservoir Dogs kind of thing lots of cliche tough-guy talk and posturing.
Ending was sweet though. Nothing ground shattering but a great book end to the story. No need or use for a sequel just tell the damn tale and get out.

I wish more stuff would end like that. Just a good story and a firm end.


Oh yeah. Not Doom.

You use the SS on your Bronco? I tracked down one of the old Gretsch G2202 junior jet short scales. The first version had an actual TV Jones designed single pup in the sweet spot. My buddy had a small collection of short scales and that one was my favorite because of the tone. Not sure what kind of strings to go with for it though. I will probably try different rounds and go back to flats in the end.

Yup stainless on the bronco. If I wanted the grind without a pick or long scale it's the way to go. My bass vi has rounds too.

Generally if a bass is to be a bass, I go flats. Rounds if I'm thinking guitar riffage an octave down.

That's why I'm pretty sure two bass Vi's one with rounds, one with flats and my jag with flats in B would cover everything I need.

Da MACE is back from the shop. Way louder and sounding better than ever, but there is still this background fizzling that sputters out...kinda miffed that that wasnt fixed but im not putting any more money into it, i have the VTA thats gonna be a big bill. I guess Ill just have to deal with it until I get a XXX to replace da MACE.

24 hour plane ride home yesterday so caught up on some movies, I don't really follow the cinema.

Spectre was so awful it made me angry. It was so damn dull. And whh did every scene need to be shot in total darkness? What a lazy way to make a movie 'edgy'.

Bridge of spies was prettt good, as was the Martian.

As for Doom, the Sword are plahing here next week, not sure Ill go, as they've indicated they'll be playing the new album almost exclusively.

New camera technology is allowing for darker and darker filming, super low light wasn't really possible until recently so filmmakers are taking advantage of the new tech to show off a bit. Sometimes it's used tastefully - the BBC's Wolf Hall is a good example - sometimes it's heavy-handed and pointless, like Spectre apparently.
