Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I may be buying an SVT w/road case and a VTM60 soon. Or at least acquiring them and paying my buddy back. Turns out my friend that went a bit nuts and maxed out his parents credit cards with gear is sitting in the slam for a while. Got out on bail and apparently did yet another stupid thing so is locked up again w/o bail.

To the point, his brother and family are left with a huge pile of gear and credit card debt as a result. His brother asked me to help him go through it and sell some of it. I told him I want dibs on the SVT(if it's still there) and the VTM60. Might catch a rad deal as well for the assistance.

Sucks that older bro layed a poopie on the whole family like that, they are really good people and a cool family. I also can't deny that when he was buying all of it I had the thought, "when this comes back to bite I harvest a mighty bounty from this lack of foresight."

I'll let you all know what's available. I doubt anything will be super pricey. I'm sure they'd like to get all the money back, but I bet they'd also like to just get rid of it and pay back as much as possible.

Amps and cabs, a bunch of cheap basses and guitars and a horde of pedals and power supplies.

As do I. After the band and I had a sit down regarding my tone, I think the lead player got the hint to back off a bit. Less gain is helping as well.

I'm not 100% the SVT is still around. The guy told me he sold it, but his word is highly questionable. His brother described the road case to me and I can't imagine what else he would have in an SVT sized road case.

A lot of the guitars are littered with stickers and duct tape in lieu of strap locks. I'm hoping some dedicated effort on my part to clean them up, organize a list and post a bunch of ads will pay off with a sweet deal on the amps. My aim is for $1000 for both.

Pork shoulder roast, Yorkshire pudding and veggies. Then a panna cotta with fresh picked mulberries and sherry sauce.

I'm on easy and repeat checkpoints like crazy. My biggest issue is you can save control preferences, but they never actually save. So every time I die it reverts, I often forget then instead of shoot at a mg-42 I command my squad to run into its stream of fire.

Still I like the tactical squad thing, and the older "slower guns".

Always record really loud.

When we did my bass tracks for the upcoming album, we put four mics on the bass cab. EV RE-20, Shure SM-7B, SM-57, and a D112. Used long speaker cables and mic cables so that we could be in a different room.

We need to start recording soon too, going to push to not do everything ourselves, whether that means we track drums professionally and do everything else ourselves or just do everything at a studio remains to be seen.

Cleared out a clogged sewer main line over the weekend. Took a bit of doing but got it done, avoiding a call to the landlord and a visit by a plumber. No more water backed up into the basement! Now to pull up the rug, dry that out and decide to keep or toss, and bleach the floor in the shop area where the water was coming up. Good times.

I'd just suggest you split signal and record two tracks simultaneously - a cleaner signal from a DI with good bass, and a mic'ed signal from your cab with as much dirt in it as you want. Then when you mix down you've got some control on how you sound.

If you're running a DI, too, there's no reason to use a D112. Kick drum mics are usually pretty scooped and weirdly peaky in some frequencies. Just use an SM-57, as you can get the lows that it lacks from the DI.

I wouldn't recommend using kick drum mics for bass. They don't capture more low end, they just have a built in EQ curve that's useful for kick drum. Modern kick drum specifically, which isn't really the sound you're usually trying to get out of an electric bass. Any typical bass friendly dynamic mic will work fine, especially if you're pairing it with a DI. EV RE20, Shure SM7B, Heil PR20, Sennhesier MD421, even a Shure SM57 would be fine. Especially if you're playing with dirt. The usable part of electric bass low end is not very "subby", it's more in the 90-120 Hz range, which isn't a probably for most general purpose mics at all. You're going to be cutting a lot of sub range low end in mixing typically or at least ducking it sidechained to the kick.
