Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

A/B Abominable HSD vs DSOMD at a short practice last night.
DSOMD is diffidently a darker over all tone. I like it and still need to tweak on it some more.
HSD has a bit more sizzle and cuts a little more, a little more top end is present.

I can dig the look of covers on various basses, some more than others, but I can't deal with them on anything I'm gonna play. I play with my fingers, I play with a pick, I pluck by the bridge, I strum by the neck, i rest my thumb on the P pickup when I fingerstyle exactly like Corey described, I palm mute, I even mute with my ring finger right on the saddle while I pluck with my index finger. Pretty basses are fine for other players. I like to look at them too. But I like my basses buck naked, uninhibited, and open to anything!

Got the Mel9 today!

My hot take is that it does track decently on bass but sounds much better on guitar/keys. In a full band setting, the bass into the pedal is probably passable, I'l give it whirl at MDT HQ tonight.

I dialed in a great tone using the "flute" setting on my KB then running that into the "clarinet" setting on the Mel9. I'm unleashing my inner satyr.

Holy crap I want one now. I've wanted a memotron for ages but they're a bit spendy.

If you listen to the outro section on the first album (the second half of "Servitude" where it's a bit faster), lots of that is extra percussion by our vocalist. I think he uses the big floor tom in just about all of our songs.

I'm probably going to switch the guard to an aged white one/parchment if I get it, I don't want to be too Roger Water-y. As far as the details, it's a AV '58 Precision Neck, all the hardware is from the '58 spec sheet, and the body is a 2002 AVRI '62 Precision. So it's basically a newer '58 reissue just assembled from Fender parts. Price is $775, which is less that those necks normally sell for alone. So it's a pretty sweet deal.



I personally love the look of covers on Fenders, they just kind of look right like that to me. Probably because I also love excess chrome on cars. However, functionally, the pickup covers usually get in my way because I tend to play right over the pickup. Thus, I normally just leave the bridge covers on so that when I'm playing with a pick I can rest my palm there. Way more comfortable that resting it on the pointy bridge, but I can't really palm mute (not that I frequently do that anyhow).

I like the black PG, personally. And yeah, that's a pretty nice price.

I actually usually rest my hand on the pickup cover when I play pick style on my 4001. Which is why I'll probably be putting it back on the 4003S at some point (previous owner took it off but put it and some alternate knobs and an allen wrench in a baggy in the case).

I tend to rest my thumb on the edge of the pickguard, the edge of the body itself, or the edge of the neck, or on the pickup cover, on Rickenbackers.

I've got a some serious bass gas at the moment. I have that wenge/bloodwood Jazz neck that I'm supposed to be selling. I also own a wenge/bloodwood fretless neck. I'm debating on selling my fretless neck and buying the fretted to build a parts PJ. My fretless neck just sounds soo good; strong lows and low mids and clear mids. The top end is bright but rolls off just before getting really harsh.

I'm thinking about finding a super cheap unfinished PJ body and throwing some GZR PJs. Probably a very dark stain and satin finish. Black PG and hardware. If I can figure out how to properly void the pickups warantee I'll wire series/parallel and possibly a coil tap on the P.
